Absolutely, can't praise 970s enough, it better every damn card in $400-500 range, with TDP less than that of $200 cards.

Yup, the GTX9xx are beasts.
I am even considering to sell my R9 280x and replace it with a GTX970 or GTX980 (depends on my pocket).
Those cards are powerful yet very power efficient.

Would a fx 8350 bottleneck with a 980?

With a good OC, nope.

At stock, the FX-8350 will cause bottleneck.

Go with a 4-Core (not 2-core with HT) Haswell Core i5, anyone. Even the lowest 4-core Haswell Core i5 will do the job without any risk of bottlenecks.

Something like 4.5GHz would eliminate any risk of bottlenecks for any game, unless its tirelessly Intel based, like Skyrim. Games like BF series will benefit from FX more.

Seriously, don't spend your money on the FX-8350 for gaming.

This is the same reason why we don't suggest i7 for gaming, games right now hardly use 4-cores/threads. The Haswell-E i7-5960X 8-core/16 threads barely improves gaming performance vs the i5-4590K 4-core/4 threads.

It's always better that those 4-cores are strong enough. FX-8350 per core performance is significantly lower than Haswell Core i5.

But, at the end, it's up to you.
