Alright, so, I have a pretty old PC that went through a lot of crap, but it works just great.
the mobo is about 3 years old, maybe 4, anyway...
I have a G35 headset which, luckily has its own audio card inside. Whenever I start the PC with the headset plugged, the computer works fine, until I unplug it, or change the playback/recording device. If that happens, well, my computer freezes completely, nothing works, absolutely nothing.I am pretty sure the motherboard got something fried up.If I try plugging in any speakers, the computer will freeze. Sometimes when I boot up, the computer will turn on with another playback device instead of the headset's, and it's going to take me 10-30 tries to switch back to it. When I say tries, I mean, reset computer, unplug headset, plug it back before the "welcome" screen, right click on playback device, make the headset default, but it's not enough, I have to make the mic default too, but when I go to the recording device tab, it freezes. So it's a matter of luck and perseverance.
HOWEVER, I decided to go in BIOS, and look for sound options there. I don't remember what I disabled there, but it was sound related, and it fixed the problem. The computer doesn't freeze anymore.
So I'm wondering, if I'm going to buy some dedicated audio card, will the problem be fixed? I mean, don't get me wrong, yeah it works, but with no sound... :\

try downloading a new audio driver first. What Motherboard you have? Search on manufactures website for Audio Drivers.

I'm pretty sure it's an Asus PB5-E and you know what? You might be right about the driver. Normally, I kept seeing soundMAX in the windows bar most of the time, but now it's missing. My question is, did it uninstall itself? Because I never remember doing anything like it. But yeah, I'll try that.

that is for windows vista, will probably work on win 7 too.

Not sure if it would uninstall itself, but could have gotten corrupted, or turned off for some reason. Maybe a windows update that installed a default driver.

I'll give it a shot when I come back home, and now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure you're right about it. I did have some minor issues with windows updates and all that. But as I said, I'll do it when I come back. Thank you for the help.

Well, I did reinstall the drivers, and now it doesn't freeze anymore, but I'm getting no speakers in the playback devices tab. Only the headset, and AMD HD Audio which is because of the GPU. Shouldn't there be some other speakers too?
I'll try reinstalling the windows, wiping everything off, and just installing it fresh new. If it won't solve it, I'll just buy some audio card.
