CPU fan failure and overheating after PSU replacement

Hello,

I had been experiencing sporadic power failures for the last month or so, typically after running a graphics-intensive game for a couple hours. The computer would shut down and restart as if there was a power failure. There were no error messages or blue screen.

Reading through forums I decided that it might be the power supply failing, so I purchased a replacement to test out. The replacement is almost identical to my original PSU (750W instead of 700W).

After installation last night I started the computer up and during the boot up received an error message saying the CPU fan was not working, and to press F1 to proceed. I booted up the rest of the way and after running for <5 min, CoreTemp was reading at >95C. I shut down and looked over everything and couldn't find anything wrong. I booted back up and checked the fans plugged into the heatsink and both were running properly.

Despite this, the computer automatically shut down after a few minutes. When I tried to boot it back up I received the same fan message and a CPU overheating message.

Any suggestions? Is it possible to cause this sort of problem by hooking up the PSU incorrectly?

I don't have all my system specs handy, but it's an above average rig, with an i7 and a GTX 680 and plenty of RAM and VRAM.

Thanks in advance for the help!

What PSU have you been running? You bought an identical replacement - but the problem might not have been that it was failing, but that it couldn't cope in the first place...

SORRY, just re-read - ALMOST identical... but still, can you tell us what PSU(s)?

Booting without the CPU fan running is a VERY bad idea btw...

A unusual problem.

The cpu did well to shut itself down to protect itself at 95c.
Normally, the cause would be a failed cooler or poor installation.
I suppose you could reseat the cooler.
Is this a liquid all in one cooler?
Could your problem be a failed pump?
If the pump is plugged into the cpu fan header and the radiator fans were plugged elsewhere, you would get those symptoms.

The fact that the fans are actually running yet you get a fan not running error is bothersome. I would suspect the problem is with the motherboard.
Hopefully, there is a bios update that addresses the problem.

What psu/s are you trying?
Unless your psu and the replacement is crap, I doubt that is the issue.

Thanks for the quick replies, here is the PSU I installed:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ALK3KEM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And this is the cooling system I'm using:

Corsair CWCH100 Hydro H100 CPU Liquid Cooler - 120mm Fan, LGA775, LGA1155, LGA1156, LGA1366, LGA 2011, AM2, AM3

I didn't disconnect the cooler from the CPU, only the fans from the cooler. Once reattached the large fans run when booted up. The cooler 3-pin power adapter is plugged into the same spot on the motherboard that says "CPU Fan" next to it. Maybe there's a chance I damaged that 3-pin power cord while I was fiddling around inside...

Maybe I'm being dense--is there an additional fan in the cooler unit that is against the CPU? The computer was certainly much louder on startup before, and then it sounded like the CPU fan dialed down once fully booted up. What really confuses me is that I didn't touch the cooler while installing the new PSU, so I should still have adequate heat transfer since the computer was working with the old PSU (despite shutting down occasionally as I described earlier).

Maybe I need to take a closer look at the cooler.
