I have an ASUS GTX 690 and was wondering if only based on performance how much better is the 980. I am not concerned about the price as much as whether it will be worth it. Thank you.

Solution
No, that card will outlast this generation of cards, wait for them to shrink the manufacturing process before upgrading, or maybe a GTX 990 might be released which you could consider buying.

The 980 may be a little faster, and maybe if the GTX 690 were terribly hot/loud/power hungry might it would be justifiable to upgrade. But its not—the GTX 690 is a very easy card to live with. I'd stick with it for now. There may be ultra high-end Maxwell cards coming later on that would make a lot more sense for you.

A 690 is essentially two lower clocked 680s or two lower clocked 770s. SLI 680s or SLI 770s outperform it due to their higher clocks. As nVidia usually does, 960 will replace 770 with few percentages increased performance.

The performance hierarchy goes like this:

970 SLI > 770 SLI or 780 TI or 960 SLI > 690 > 980 > 780 or 760 SLI > 970 > 770 or 680.

But this is a case when SLI scales well. If SLI does not scale well then the 980 will win over the 690.
