I have a general networking question about our office network. Currently we have a server that is on the 10.x.x.x network. We have two registers that communicate with the server on the 10.x.x.x network. We also have a wireless network which is on the 192.x.x.x network. From a laptop connected to the wireless I was able to communicate to the server that's on the 10.x.x.x My question is how is this possible if they are on two separate networks?

Are they linked together with VPN? They have to be linked together someway for them to communicate together.

The wireless network, while located on a different subnet, originates from a router which is connected to the 10.x.x.x network. After that, the wireless router's DHCP server will distribute a different set of IP addresses to clients connected wirelessly, but it is still part of the same larger network as your servers. In all likelihood, the IPs that you are describing are simply the locally assigned IP addresses, but not your "real" IP addresses assigned by your ISP.

192.x.x.x is a very common default wireless network range.

inerax- They are not VPN together. Entomber- I see what your saying but do you potentially see a problem with this set up? The router that is giving out the 10.x.x.x IP addresses has dhcp enabled as well as the wireless router that is giving out the 192.x.x.x Ip addresses.

yes, having two competing DHCP servers is not necessarily something that you want in your network. I'm not sure where you're going with your question though, are you responsible for managing your office network?

Yes. i'm responsible for managing the network and we've had some weird problems happening lately such as the two registers randomly dropping its connection to the server. I'm just trying to get to the bottom of it.

find that wireless router and switch the DHCP off, switch the NAT off (if applicable), just make it run as a network extender.
