Anyone with this card that already have stable overclock settings on MSI Afterburner? I'm still kind of new to overclocking and trying to master it, but wanting help from the pro's so I don't ruin my brand new beaut. :bounce:

Thanks in advanced! :D

The gtx 970 is quite new so there won't be much of us whom have had a go at overclocking it.

But you won't be guaranteed the overclocks that someone else has, you'll have to clock up a little and test like a usual overclock to find that.

I would like to know this too. I know that MSI Gaming App has an overclock mode which does not effect warranty I wouldn't mind knowing a safe overclock using MSI Afterburn without adjusting Voltage?

I know JayzTwoCents on youtube got his gtx 970 to 1500mhz. Knowing him he upped the voltage to as much as it can handle.

Ive only seen people who adjust voltage on the chip, most overclockers do bump the voltage.

As much as I'd like to overclock it to 1500 mhz, I do imagine that would be opting for the shortest possible lifespan of the card. I've read in a few places that it's best to test overclock by increasing in increments of 13? Is that significantly true?

same 1200 without adjusting voltages would suit me nicely apparently msi gaming app oc mode performs better than 780ti at 1080p on most games which is pretty good at almost half the price lol

Well personally I go up in 20-25mhz increments and test every increment, if it BSOD's or crashes it is unstable. So you either back down the clocks or add more voltage if you're game.

when you're close to your maximum you reduce how big your steps are, maybe 5-10mhz. So no 13mhz increments is nothing special, it all depends on what you use.

Ive head alot of good overclocking results on the gtx 970.

Is that both Memory Clock and Core Clock by 20-25mhz each time or different for each?

The core clock makes the most performance difference, a high memory overclock yields about 3-4fps increase, but a massive core overclock can increase by 10fps or more.

Focus on the core clock first and then your memory, but not at the same time. Just up the core clock by about 30mhz at first, and then test on 3Dmark or benchmarks such as uniengine. Then continue like this but decreasing your steps as you climb up.

Eventually when your pc crashes or the benchmark crashes back it down a half your step and test again. If it crashes go back down the other half. That will be your highest overclock on stock volts.

From there you can either increase voltage, I would say 0.05v and test again if your comfortable with adjusting voltage.

Sounds good. So when I have found what my core clock goes upto before crashing should I move on to testing my memory clock. for example I managed to get to 1250 core clock then would I leave that at as it is and adjust my memory clock? Thank for all your help btw.

Yup, memory clock is not as important but does make a difference.

Al give it a whirl tonight and see how it goes. Do you recommend not using MSI Gaming App and just doing my own on MSI AfterBurner. Or should I use the overclock mode on Gaming App then further Overclock it with AfterBurner if that is possible?

Well I personally only use MSI afterburner. It shouldn't make a difference anyway :)

So I got my card yesterday, overclocked it a bit. I'm curious, is +70mv too high of a voltage? My temps didn't go above 60c under load, idle 27c, but I was able to overclock it 1450mhz and +500 memory stable. It overclocks very nicely, I'm a little concerned about the voltage.

That sounds pretty awesome gonna have to give mine a whirl when I get in I heard them memory can reach around 8000 and the core can reach 1500+ plus ad be happy with 1300core 7500memory if am honest what score your get on 3dmark?

+0.7v is not bad, just don't go over 1.2v total. Not sure about how much it can take but in previous gen cards 1.25v was about the max.

60 degrees and 1450mhz is a great overclock. Overall these cards are amazing overclockers.

@Quinn, I ran some benchmarks but I don't remember the scores I'll have to post it when I get home

@Anonymous I have a couple questions for ya. First is how significant is overclocking the memory? Secondly, if my overclock is +500 on afterburner what would that equate to if the base memory clock was 7010? I read that mhz on memory is times 4 due to gddr5, so I'm a little confused.

Yes, it is 4 times. Say your memory was at a speed of 1200mhz. That would be an effective memory speed of 4800 or 4.8gb/s. I usually use mhz instead of the actual memory rate. So 7010 effective memory would equal to 1752mhz on the memory. Now did you add 500mhz or 500 to the actual memory speed?

Overclocking the memory does not make much of a difference in gaming performance, Most people who did overclock this card didn't actually bother too. On my card (which is not a 970) 100mhz increase gave about 1-2fps increase over stock memory. So it may not be worth it but I did it anyway for the scores ;)

1450mhz is still a very nice overclock and it should make a big difference.

I have the MSI GTX970 4G too, lovin' it. To avoid any confusion while you're clocking it use some monitoring software to keep an eye on temps and speeds (current/min/max). I clocked the RAM on my card to +500Mhz straight away and it works perfectly at 8000Mhz. When I'm messing around with clocking the card I use FurMark as I'm making the changes, then I can see the effects to the clocks immediately in OpenHardwareMonitor/HWMonitor/AfterBurner. When going too far with clocks it tends to crash the nVidia driver first. Good luck with your clocking, keep us posted on your results.

@Anonymouse awesome thanks for the explanation! :)

@TonyRoma Perfect! Yes, I added +500Mhz to the memory clock and that was fine running Unagine, Heaven, Firestrike, etc. The voltage is currently at 75mv and my core clock is at +175 stable so about 1521? I have GPU-Z up to monitor the temps and the clocks to make sure its fully being utilize while in game. I set the fan speed at 40% and my temps don't go above 38c while playing. I think its going fairly well! :bounce:

I managed this very stable OC at stock voltages http://www.3dmark.com/fs/2833026 I donno whether I should start trying to push it further as I only really game at 1080p at the moment so there might not be much point till I go for a higher resolution monitor. Plus am not totally confident with altering the voltage safely lol. Judging by my score is there anything anyone thinks I should do differently?

core clock = +150
mem clock = +200

Safe stable clocks.

Doesn't look too bad, btw the 970 shouldn't need to much overclocking as it can already handle all 1080p gaming.

How does it cope at 1440p gaming just I am considering for an early xmas present for myself lol getting myself either 1440p monitor or 1080p 144hz monitor with a budget of £400 has to be 27inch or more I have a 27inch Acer at the moment that is great and was quite cheap I believe I got it for £150 off amazon just looking for a decent upgrade any recommendations with that budget I would love the asus pg287q sadly its put of my budget :(

A 970 will be able to do 1440p quite nicely.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wEOK6Hf4h8
look here, and with your overclocks expect a 980 performance roughly.
Im sorry I cannot recommend a monitor exact model though. but I can recommend Asus or even AOC.
Also I would advise you to look up what an IPS monitor is, it looks better but only 60hz.

The 13MHz thing was most likely from Kepler overclocking. When the temp or voltage got too high on those cards, they would down clock in 13MHz increments.
