In November 2013 I bought a Windows 8 Pro upgrade key for users with XP, Vista, or 7 from eBay for $39.99 and everything worked well until today.

My Intel 730 240 GB SSD arrived today and I de-registered the windows 8.1 pro on my old SSD (intel 520) and installed Windows 7 on the 730 SSD. I ran the upgrade as I did last year and when I got to Windows 8 it said my product key has been blocked and I phoned microsoft activation centre and in an automated message they said they couldn't do anything about my situation. I am now back to installing Windows 7 which is crappy because even my AMD E1 laptop has Windows 8.1 and I can't get the best OS on my i7 desktop.

What is going on? They key was working fine today until I started using my new SSD?

That was a limited time upgrade - normal price is $69.99 and $99.99 for the full version (you can get it for $1-5 off). The items you purchased on ebay were either the limited time promo (it expired in January 2014) or they are not valid keys (they sold one key to many people).

There is no limited time. The special offer price was a limited time meaning the sale will end and go to normal price. But keys don't expire unless it's a multi use key which upgrades aren't. If it's a legit key, talk to a person not the automated message.
