Hello everyone :) . This is my first post on the TH forums, looong time reader though. I hope I've posted this thread in the right spot as my question is mainly regarding using MSI's BIOS for overclocking.

I've been out of the overclocking scene for about 8 years now, after reading this article a few weeks ago:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/pentium-g3258-b81-c...

I've decided it was such a cheap combo why not go ahead and dive in. I'm currently using the cpu/mobo combo in the thread title along with an H60 2013 edition water cooling system, 4 gb of mushkin pc1333 ram and a 1tb WD blue HDD. Everything has been running great for the past couple of days without any issues.

Now for my question. After making sure everything is good stock I wanted to start pushing for a decent overclock, I used AIDA64 to stress test a 400mhz overclock without problems but as soon as I reach close to 4ghz I will start to blue screen and need to bump up the voltage. I figured out how to change the clock speed in the bios but I'm having a bit of trouble with adjusting the voltage, it appears to be the same concept as the clock just select change it and hit enter, but after I do so the voltage will reset itself in the bios it will not stick.

Why is this topic so obscure? I've found TONS of article recommending this combo including TH's article for overclocking, but no actual guides on how to actually overclock with it properly. Is it because it's technically a no no since it's not a Z chip board? If someone can please point me in the right direction in terms of a guide for OC'ing with this combo BIOS that would be great. Or please explain it to me.

Thanks!

Did you update the BIOS to one that supports overclocking properly? That's an important part of making it work, and there's always the potential that Intel will bring the axe down on the practice, so to speak.

Hello and thanks for your reply.

Yes I have updated the BIOS to ver. 1.7 as well as updating windows 7 x64 and making sure all my other drivers are up to date. As I had mentioned I've been successful overclocking the cpu a few hundred mhz, but when I get close to 4ghz I will start to blue screen booting into windows. My problem is adjusting the voltage I'm not really grasping what I have to change to get the voltage to stick. Also should I turn EIST off while overclocking?
