I see 4 memory sticks installed in my motherboard, but the system shows 6144 MB , which is 6GB. How is this possible? I figured 2GB for each sticks, so 8GB should be the memory of my computer.

P/S : My OS is WIndow 7 HP x64/ Memory type is DDR3

Might be 2x2GB + 2x1GB - take a look in CPU-Z (free app), in the SPD tab, it will let you look at each stick individually and get the model #

If you are comfortable with removing and installing memory modules, the easiest way to initially see what's going on would be to shut down, remove all but one module, reboot and see if the RAM is recognized and the system shows 2GB. Do this for each module. If one of the modules is not recognized it may be bad, incompatible or of an unsupported type. If all the modules are ok individually, you may have a bad memory slot. When only one module is installed it probably needs to be in a particular location, probably at one end or the other, so if one slot doesn't work, try the other. It would also help to have your system specs in order to give you more specific information:
