we will keep that in the back of our minds, and that's where it stays, lol.
maybe faster again, but if the will have lower power?? Amd ?? no.
And NVidia,s answer to the amd 300 series is also waiting, and the battle goes on.

Apparently AMD's gonna use a 512-memory bus so i'm betting you're gonna be right about the power-consumption.

AMD is simply falling behind now. Their last card, the 285, already made 0 sense whatsoever (and wasn't even cheap), and now it's pretty much confirmed now that right after the 900 series' release they're "teasing" a product that won't come out for another 4 months or so. They just didn't have a decent architecture/design ready to make a better 28nm card, probably they hoped the 20nm chips would come (they never did) which would make the cards automatically faster, so they didn't design much new lately, although I'm also starting to think they simply don't have the right engineers to keep up with today's demands.
Nvidia on the other hand designed a whole new architecture for those 20nm chips, so when they had to produce it on 28nm they could pretty quickly make 28nm cards that are an actual improvement from the last generation, hence they're in a very comforable position now.

^^Post above makes some sense.
Maybe thats why AMD turned to SSDs and other components

Nice one Mastergup ! Quick word of advice to anyone oggling our settings on those benches. Do not copy them everyones hardware varies. If you want to oc your card start with 10mhz at a time and test. Stay safe out there ;) .

I'd just RMA it and either try another or go with a different brand. I just had a quick google and all the brands except ASUS are flagging as having the odd noisy card. Even the gigabyte has a few people complaining about it even a youtube vid.

The only problem I see with the ASUS card is with the fan needing its own profile see :- http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2014/09/19/nv...

"One issue we did notice with the ASUS card is that it initially wasn't boosting as high as we'd have expected. We noticed that the fans didn't seem to want to spin beyond 42 percent, apparently prioritising low noise over boost frequency. As such, we set the fans manually to 50 percent, which saw a higher and more constant boost clock emerge. The downside to this is that the fan speed is locked, and won't slow down or enter its passive mode, even when idle."

Do i read you corectley did you rma you msi card also lone gun????

NOPE my MSI card seems like yours to be A'OK ! you read me wrong their MasterGup I was answering two threads with one post coz I'm a busy man. I was suggesting Alex RMA his just below the bit where I quoted him.

At this stage is worth waiting for revised models with better components than what they are currently using. ALL GTX 970 are defective except few lucky cards.

Ah oke glad to here you keep yours, and love's it, like i do mine hahaha.
When cards have problems the do talk alot about it on the internet, i think more people have no problems with it then there are people that have problems, but you don't hear them as much.

a lot of this thread reminds me of my situation

I have 2x MSI cards right now and they run beautifully in everything also really nice OC to 1500+ with very minimal effort and still good temps (around 70c in load). My problem stems in that when I run 3DMark FireStrike I get an odd ticking noise coming from my cards. It's not really a coil whine, but it's a low pitched ticking noise...sounds like crickets in my computer but you only hear it when you take the side panel off. This only happens in 3DMark...not in any game I've tried.

I went ahead and purchased 2 more MSI cards from Newegg today as they came back in stock. In a nervous spree I also purchased 2 gigabyte cards in case the MSI ones have this issue again. I have Newegg Premier so I can return with no restocking fee. I figured I could try both and see which I like more or which doesn't have a whine. But now I'm regretting the Gigabyte purchase. I think I'm going to cancel that purchase and just hope the 2 new MSI cards don't have cricket noises.

Other than this the MSI cards are phenomenal. I wish they had backplates, but they're so light/thin that it almost doesn't even matter.

After all discussion and this and that i made conclusion it comes down to what i need. Personally i dont care if card is long loud or quiet. MSI and Gigabyte have very similar performance with Gigabyte outplaying MSI by a bit.

Yesterday i tried to buy my build with MSI. I couldnt buy it because of problems with my bank. Gonna try today too unless its sold out. If i miss it i will buy gigabyte.
IMO coil whine can occur in any card. Also i dont trust Gigabyte fans. I heard they could die fast or at least faster.

Right. Thanks for the reply. My build is mostly ASUS lol, but I do not like the ASUS performance. After reading about the Gigabyte fan issues you are talking about, how many cards are having this issue? Is it a substantial number?

No Gigabyte 970 has yet had dying fan problems. The reason i mentioned it is that in long term the fans die faster. I heard people talking about it. It could be true since Gigabyte doesnt use any upgraded fans like MSI does. I wont be able to specify them but thats that.
In practice i have seen some Gigabyte cards get coil whine, so it just mean no card is perfect. But i think its new 970 chip that just has higher chance of having coil whine.

I had issues too... I really want a GTX 970 but I'll wait next few weeks and see uf new stock are made properly and now with cheap low quality components.

I am keeping an eye on 980 but I don't trust Nvidia in general after this situation.

RMA it... What's the point having a faulty card for the sake of it?

All of the GTX 970 have issues I'm reading forums un three languages same story everywhere.

I wonder why some website don't cover this but they are ok covering iphone 6 issues...

because the amount of people buying iphones vs GTX 970s favors iphone tremendously lol

but I do agree...I'm kind of tired researching all the different brands...it seems all of them have some issue

I'm sticking with MSI for now...I have my replacement cards coming today...out of the four msi cards I hope to find 2 that don't give me odd noises...if not I will return all four and try gigabyte next...

True but pc oriented tech sites should talk also about PC-gate lol

Gigabyte was the first with coul whine check YouTube and you'll laugh.

I personally gave up and not giving my money away for shitty hardware, better going to the pub!

I wait and see what's happening next, hopefully people will not be stupid enough to hold on broken hardware and manufacturers will have to actually buy proper components not using potatoes instead of capacitors!

Yeah I'm definitely returning the card, I'm just way too sensitive to these high-pitched buzzing noises to be able to put up with it. And it's true there's problems with all the manufacturer's cards it seems. So i have no idea what I'll do next, I really don't wanna order another 970, hoping that one will function better.. I'm gonna wait a bit to see if the problems get resolved by the manufacturers, and in fact I just might take a break from gaming and wait for the 20/18/16nm cards next year, and just use my HD 4600 for now, lol.

This is the reason why people prefer consolea and all these brands are really digging their own graves...

Well I personally keep my 760 as it's so quiet and still a solid card no point in buying a new one now and hoping to be lucky...

I've googled a bit to see if the reference cards (of the 980) have these issues too, and there's indeed people complaining about coil noise with those card. So it's not just the non-reference cards, although indeed you would think that with the custom PCB's from brands like Asus it would be fixed, but apparently not and that sucks..
And yeah for now it's certainly best you keep your 760. (I already sold my 750 Ti though, haha.)

Buy a new one or second hand, you always have market for 750!

Shame really this is something new from Nvidia, quality down the drain...

It would be nice to know why it happens and whether they test their cards lol

Yeah this apparently isn't properly done by Nvidia, which is really a shame because i think they did a great job engineering this new architecture, when you see how power efficient it is while still on 28nm.
m

October 3, 2014 9:18:48 AM

And i don't really wanna buy a 750Ti again, or any other mere low/mid range card for that matter, now that I had the 970 in my hands. I'd like to wait for the 20 or 18nm or whatever process, although I fear that's gonna be next summer or maybe even autumn 2015.. So I'll probably get me a 970 or 960 if Nvidia has made sure they fixed the problems or test all these cards before shipping them out..

If they have a sticker on the fan it means that it is the first stock, for further info GOOGLE MSI FORUM and read the GTX 970 FAN ISSUE topic with MSI replying to it... as if they are not broken they just will after your return period :)

All 970 are F*** u*** so again it is just a matter of luck if you get one that work........end of :)

Then again up to you you may be EXTREMELY LUCKY :)

the truth is we are among the very little population of people that probably have a problem. Most of the 970s are probably ok...usually the ones with ok cards aren't in the forums 24/7 like we are. The people with issues live on the forums. If there were severe problems there would be stories about it, but there isn't.

I know of the many issues on the MSI forums...but outside of the ticking noise I really have no issues...so if the new ones don't tick I'm keeping them.

I'm guessing the majority of the 970s are still ok, but seeing the complaints, the amount of cards with issues is definitely much higher than normal.

I totally agree with you on that. The people who are having no issues with their card are not going to voice their opinions on the forums. Each card has their individual issues, but none are major in my opinion.

totally agree with

Has anyone found a problem with Gigabyte version? I'm reading all the reviews and haven't found one complaint about it.

I've seen one or two gigabyte complaints, most complaints seem to be the MSI, and EVGA in the first few days (dunno if that's fixed now).
But then again, the hadn't seen any Asus complaints at all when I ordered, and my card still has coil whine issues. So you never know...

Same story...all current GTX 970 from all makers have coil whine (with MSI adding fans issues on which the company is working on, please refer to MSI official forum), there are a few people with "normal" cards but the number of faulty cards is well above the acceptable so I can assume there is some kind of design flaw with the current stock.

Some website as Novatech (where I bought and then returned my card for a full refund) have postponed stock of MSI to the end of October which makes me think that some makers like MSI are trying to sort this issue out...

I really want a new card after seeing how they perform but it is better to wait and get an actually working card than compromise with noises for the sake of it.

Just a selection as not everyone bother adding videos of faulty cards:

Desa, I fail to understand why you are spending so much time complaining about the 900 series.
You're all over youtube, these forums and probably more. Just focus on something else in your life and buy a 970 after the flaw has been fixed.

Well yes here's the update:

First I took off those stickers very slow and carefully. Didn't do it so careful with the first two a week ago...just teared them suckers off I was so excited :) . I then installed each of the four cards individually. I went ahead and ran FireStrike as was the problem before. I kept the side panel off in order to really hear the buzzing noise. The original two still gave me the buzzing noise individually, but wasn't as loud as there was only one at a time and not in SLI.

The two new cards still gave the buzz, but BARELY and I mean I had to get my ear lobe basically on the heat sink pipes to hear it. IMO it's not even a defect at this point considering I couldn't hear it without rubbing my ear on the card. The fans run normally...no one fan spinning up to 100% while the other does nothing. Then again my original two cards didn't have this issue either, only the buzzing noise.

IMO it was a success! I am happy with the two new ones as the buzzing noise is so quiet now I'd never notice it unlike before where it was quite loud. There's only one other thing that gets me with the MSI cards though. I am paranoid about the VRM temps. Guru3D's review with the thermal imaging gets me a little nervous especially in comparisons with Gigabyte's. I then went ahead for another test with one of the two new (good) cards and ran Bioshock Infinite for around 5 minutes. I used an infrared thermometer and measured readings from the VRM on the back of the card. I was getting around 70-80C. Guru's review read around 80-90C. Granted with my full setup I have a sound card in front of the VRM, the side panel would be on the case and I'd be running in SLI so likely mine would be hotter in real life scenario.

What are comfortable VRM temperatures? I am about to start a thread about that because I am concerned, but I have seen they can easily run at well over 100C.

Sounds like you got some dodgy cards straight off the bat! It is good to hear that your new ones are performing better.

I would try not to let my graphics cards exceed 80c. Any higher and that is getting a bit dangerous in my eyes. But i might be wrong. I will do some research for you and see what comes up.

UPDATE: It seems 85c is still a fine temp. Any higher and that is the danger zone. So I would not go 90c. And no way would I go to 100c. Hope that helps!

@Guinibee
I am happy to hear that your MSI cards work fine. As i said, when i will recieve mine i will take the sticker off very carefully.
IMO the little buzzing sound is supposed to be there. Coil whine is when your card is squeaking and whining and it gets on ur nerves. But if you can barely hear the card IMO its how it supposed to be. Good to hear your card is ok.

Yeah thanks... But I'm a perfectionist and I won't be comfortable until I try the gigabyte cards to see the difference.
I am over the buzz noise that it seems so common across all brands I think it's supposed to happen. Also the vrm didn't seem too hot on my self test.

I would like to try msi cards from the new batch as well without the sticker... I guess I'm not going to be comfortable until I try every option lol

Gigabyte models are sold for 455$. Why Nvidia doesn't do anything about it.

Well I went ahead and tested my GTX 670 EVGA cards to see if I could hear a coil buzzing noise like the MSI cards and low and behold during FireStrike I'm getting the noise with them as well. I guess I just never noticed because the fans on those cards were so loud and I never ran a benchmark on those cards.

this leads me to believe either this is very normal and everyone just hasn't noticed until now because of how quiet the MSI cards run, or something else is going on in my PC that needs fixing...mobo or PSU are my first thoughts. I can't believe it's anything in my computer though seeing as a LOT of people have the buzzing noise...

I think its perfectly fine. If it takes you to get your ear cut off by fans to hear the buzzing sound i think its allright. Coil whine is heard through the best noice cancelling cases.
