R9 295X2 - Issues

Hey everyone,

So my XFX R9 295X2 arrived today. I plugged it in (I have an Antec HCG-900W PSU) as per the configurations, which is 2 separate 8-pin plugs, and they're both 40A each. I have my i7 5930k overclocked to 4.2GHZ, my DDR4 RAM in XMP 2.0 mode, and that's about it.

When I try to run or change settings in Crysis 3, STALKER, Metro, and 3DMark, it freezes the system, sometimes providing flickering before it does it. I have removed all overclocks, and tried different cables for the card. I can idle and browse fine, but as soon as any strain is on the card, it is gone.

I DID order a Seasonic X-1250W PSU, because I was in need of an upgrade. I am just wondering if it is definitely the PSU doing this, or if the card is faulty?

Cheers everyone.

I think it's the lack of power being injected into the card causing crashes, this is a common consequence.

If I were you I'd send back the card just to be on the safe side, as I'd be super pissed if it worked with the seasonic for a while but stopped working after possible damage from multiple low psu stressing.

In addition, AMD's own reccommendation are 1500 power supplies. But let's not forget that although you can run any card on almost any psu that is outside of the typical power consumption, you don't want your psu working at 80%+ load.

I don't know if this matters, but I checked my hardware monitor in BIOS, and it says the system voltage usage was over 12V.

Other things I noticed are:

>Stuttering PSU on startup (fan up, up, up, down, down, up continuous)
>The LED on the card flickering and faltering at times

If I read the bottom of the PSU correctly, 2x 12V 40A rails equal a total of 850W under load, this can explain why I am having issues, if the 150W and this one are pushing close.

Many others are saying if the card stutters, BSOD's, and flickers + bad framerates, it's due to an incompatible PSU.

Just updating the post:

I found this site http://www.pc-specs.com/gpu/ATI/R-200_Series/Radeon_R9_... which says that my PSU isn't even on there, and looking further at the specs of mine, because it is only a Bronze model, and it is older, it is not worth trying to push it. It may be safe to bet that the new PSU will definitely work with the card.

I went into town, and borrowed an old 800W and 1000W PSU from the store. They're both Bronze non modular as well as my HCG-900, so I hooked them up to try it out. Both of them performed WORSE than the HCG-900, with the 800W failing to turn the system on at all (due to rail incompatibility), and the 1000W struggling to even get to the desktop.

I'll keep everyone updated for when my new Seasonic X-1250W PSU is here.

Unless there is something wrong with your power supply, it should be able to provide enough amperage for that card. I hate to re-ask the question you answered straight off, but you made sure the two plugs were each separately on 12v3 and 12v4 and not both on 12v3 or 12v4? According to Antec's specs, you have 4 rails and 4 PCIe 8 pin connectors, but two connectors share each rail. They aren't separated out at 1 8 pin connector per rail.

You could try running a benchmark program in windowed mode (not full screen) to stress the card out on only one GPU. if it's power, the single GPU should keep the system stable. I'd also scrub off and reload your drivers on the system (or swap the stable release for the beta drivers).

It's odd it seems to happen when you're changing configs. If it was power or heat, it'd happen right in the middle of load, not in a menu.

Okay, reporting back in, with the issue solved!

The Antec HCG-900W PSU was definitely not compatible. I managed to cancel my order for the Seasonic 1250W PSU, as there was a Thermaltake XT-1275W Gold 80+ Modular in town, for a good price. I installed it, and there we go, it worked!

However, another issue arose. When you activate CrossfireX via Catalyst Control Center, the card becomes so unstable that it will eventually BSOD, and hard reset the PC. I spent a long time researching this, and it turns out that I have to disable ULPS in the registry. When disabled, and after a restart, I tried re-enabling CrossfireX, and the issues returned immediately.

Here's the weird part - even with CrossfireX unticked, and the ULPS registry entries disabled, CrossfireX is still enabled, which, upon entering all applications and game, did not have any problems whatsoever. I am now running my card, with no issues, at its potential. So, you cannot tick CrossfireX in CCC, but disabling ULPS entries without XfireX does the same job.

Thank you to everyone who has assisted me, both here and privately. It's been an interesting ride. I will make a large post soon for all R9 295X2 common issues, and fixes, as I compiled all the possible fixes.
