With my new Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3 motherboard, when i install the realtek HD audio driver it screws with my sound.

When i have my headset plugged in or out it will come up with a red X next to the sound in the system tray.

That being said, once it is uninstalled my sound will work fine. Do i need to have realtek installed on my system, will the motherboard screw up if i don't install the realtek drivers?

Solution
If your sound works okay without the driver from Gigabyte's website, you don't need it. Windows has probably installed it's own version of the Realtek driver during the Windows installation. It won't cause any problems.

Look in Device Manager to see if the sound driver is okay with no errors flagged. If it is, leave it as it is.
