can i put a 6 pin connector

to a gpu that has 8 pin connection?

All the 12VDC pins on both the 6pin and 8pin connectors are connected on the video card so it doesn't know the difference. The reason for 8 wires vs 6 wires is because as current increases you need larger wire.

What model is the GPU? It will, if the GPU draws enough power.

the gpu is radeon 4850 golden sample.Don't worry about the psu.I was wondering if i really need to buy the 8 pin power cable

If your gpu has a 8 pin connector, you need to put an 8 pin power supply connector to it. 8 pins need 150W. 6 pins only supply 75W.

You can combine different cables but you most likely need to fill out all the pins for the card to work correctly.

You can combine the cables as such for a 8 pin connection:

4+4 pin, 6+2 pin or a straight up 8 pin of course. What PSU do you have?
