Intel Xeon E3-1271 V3 vs Intel Core i7-4790K

Hey there! First things first, what's the difference between a Xeon quad-core and a i7 quad-core processor? Secondly, this >link< leads to a comparison between the previous models of the two processors I am considering for my first build. The Xeon is 3.6GHz and has an overclock of 4.0GHz whilst the i7 is 4.0GHz and overclocks to 4.4Ghz. The Intel Xeon E3-1271 V3 goes for $389 and the Intel Core i7-4790K goes for $386 where I am, will it be worth the whole $3 extra for Xeon?

If there are any questions as to what the rest of my build is consisting of, ask them. I am also currently searching for a motherboard which you can have an opinion on >here<.

Xeons are pretty much non-OCable i7's without integrated graphics. i7 4790k is a better buy if you want to 'OC', not Turbo Boost. i7 can go around 4.6-4.7GHz with a good enough cooler. Xeon is limited to 4.1Ghz. There's nothing better with Xeon other than the fact that you can't OC on it which's a plus point for many users. However, if you SLI, I'd go with 4790k, a Z MoBo compliments it and will support SLI in x8 config, which's what is optmimum.

The key benefit of a Xeon over an equivalent Core series processor is that it is intended to cope with being run at max or near-max usage for extended periods of time, or even constantly. With the exception of people doing things like 3D rendering, home users rarely do this

Thanks for clearing that up. Speaking of a good cooler, can you recommend anything? I've not thought about cooling and was just thinking about sticking with the fans in this >case<. It has four small fans plus a large 200mm one on it's panel. I think it will be ok but, as I've said, I've not looked into whether the specs I'm gonna buy plus overclocking is going to be too much for it.

My specs are:
i7 4790k (probably overclocked)
8GB 1600Mhz
Gainward GTX 970 4GB
(need a motherboard w/ SLI for later on in life)

Oh cool, thanks! I'm not going to be rendering anything, mainly gaming and I might get into streaming. Is it a large difference between gaming and rendering 3D images? If not, it looks like I'll be getting the i7.

It's a massive difference - 3D rendering with the likes of 3DSmax etc is the only thing I know of that uses 100% of CPU capacity, continuously. Try running Cinebench with Task Manager open to the CPU usage tab and you'll see what I mean

Games by comparison are far more reliant on your graphics card
