If you can afford an SSD there are no drawbacks...

Hey ther, JRedmond!

It really depends on the HDD itself.
If you have one with fast read/write speed, you will have a fast performance running any platform.
I found a thread that can help you with more detailed info on SSD vs HDD performance running Linux

Hope I helped you! :)

I have two Ubuntu PCs, one each with SSD and HDD, both with Celeron G540 CPU, so I can tell you precisely the difference it makes. HDD is completely usable, boot time is about 30 seconds. SSD indeed boots faster, I would say less than 10 seconds. Up to you if that difference is worth it to go SSD.

yes ubuntu does preform fast on a ssd.but have in mind trim is enabled by default on ubuntu 14.04 for intel and samsung ssd's only.if its not a intel or a samsung ssd you will need to enable it manualy.
if budget is a concern you can search for a sshd it is a hdd with a ssd used for cache normaly 8gb and aplications and thing that are being used frequently get stored in that memory so you can achive better preformance than a normal hard drive.and you do not need to make any special configuration.you just plug it in like a normal hard drive.

these are good if you have a old computer that doesent support trim, want to get better preformane but not spent insane amount of money for a small amount of storage.it is usualy 20 $ more than a hdd.it boots way faster than a hdd but not as fast as a ssd.
