When I powered up my computer today, I noticed that I could not connect to websites like youtube, google, yahoo. Other websites work just fine. When I'm trying to connect to youtube for example, it says that my SSL connection has failed. I've checked my date and time multiple times, restarted my computer, tried another browser, scanned for viruses, but nothing has yet fixed the problem. The only way I could connect to those websites was through a proxy. Other computers can connect to the websites just fine on the same network. If any more information is needed just say so.

What antivirus have you scanned with? I presume it was uptodate? Have you also scanned for malware? Would recommend BitDefender and Malwarebytes for scanning

Just to check 100% (because time zones and years can be interesting): http://time.is/

Is your computer connected via ethernet or WiFi?

snowctrl: I've scanned with microsoft security essentials. I can try to scan with BitDefender too

someone somewhere: My clock was 36 seconds behind. I adjusted it but the SSL error is still there.

That's very weird. It's very difficult for someone to MITM you via ethernet; WiFi would be at least possible.

36 seconds isn't an issue.

Can you post the exact error that the browser gives? There's a vague possibility that something's gotten messed up in your public keys for the CAs. Though I think most browsers use their own instead of the OS's.

Also, I seem to have gotten adware at the same time.

That's a pretty vague error. Can you click the symbol in the URL bar, and see if you can get more info?

What symbol in the URL bar? There is none that I see that displays errors (on chrome and IE at least).

On chrome it's a padlock with a red cross, just to the left of the crossed out "https".

It is the normal paper symbol on the websites I cannot access.

Can you click it anyway? Does it provide any info?

It says

Identity not verified"

On the connection tab it says
"The identity of this websites has not been verified"
and
"Your connection to www.youtube.com is not encrypted"

Screenshot? Even if it's in Norwegian, I should at least be able to figure out what it's trying to say.

The fact that it works via a proxy server is pretty interesting, though...

Might be worth a try if removing the malware didn't fix your problem:

Open Google Chrome. Press “Customize and control Google Chrome” option.
Click on ” Settings”
Scroll down and click on “Show advanced settings”.
Now, scroll down. You will see a tab of “Change Proxy Settings” under Network. Click on it.
Change Proxy Settings option
_Change Proxy Settings option_
A new window of Internet Properties will open in your screen.
Choose “Security” tab. Set Security level zone as medium. If it is selected as before then leave it.
Choose “Privacy” tab. Set Internet zone as medium. If it is selected as before then leave it.
Now, choose “Content” tab. Click on “Clear SSL state” and press OK.

Nice screenshot, but there's a more button for a reason.

Crap. Chose wrong solution. snowctrl was correct, I had a scan with bitdefender and it removed the virus that had been plaguing me. Thanks for all the help though.

Someone Somewhere: I posted what the more button displayed earlier in the thread. When pressing more, it only said ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR.

The give-away was that you were seeing only certain sites blocked....
