Hey guys! This is my first post here but I have been a lurker for some time now. I have decided to upgrade my PC to Windows 8.1, and all is good and fine except I now have one slightly unsettling problem. Whenever I try to shut down or restart the computer the system freezes while those dots are spinning. This was not a problem with plain ol' Windows 8. Repeat: I never had this problem with Windows 8! However, after 8.1 upgrade I can't successfully shut down the computer. I always have to hold my power-button down and force the system to power off, which I'm sure you would agree is not at all an ideal situation. I should also note that ocassionally (not every time, maybe 1 in 5), 10-30 seconds after freeze I will get a BSOD with a 'machine check exception' or 'clock watchdog timeout' error. I don't think any of my hardware is running beyond its capabilities (unless the OS is somehow forcing something to do this) and I am not overclocking anything right now, so color me confused. I tried switching off the 'fast startup' mode and that doesn't seem to have fixed the problem. ALL of my drivers are up to date. And the problem is unique to Windows 8.1. I'll list my specs so you all can get a good idea of what I have and can possibly help me out. Maybe there's something I missed. The PC is an OEM. HP Pavilion HPE h9-1150

Specs:
Motherboard: Pegatron IPMMB-FM (the Formosa board)
Processor: Intel Core i5 3550
Memory: 10gb DDR3-1333 10600 MB/sec
Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 770
Audio: Integrated IDT 92HD73E 7.1 channel
Wireless: PCIe Mini-card 802.11 b/g/n
HDD: 2TB 7200RPM SATA
CD/DVD: Blu-ray disc drive
Power: 600W 100-240V (600 is for the graphics card)
I also have a wireless USB keyboard and wireless USB mouse.

Anybody have any ideas? Are there any incompatibilities that you can see in my specs list? Thanks in advance!

Thanks johnbl I will try that and get back to you. Also after posting this I found another of your solutions on another very similar thread and will try those ideas out as well. Thanks!

Okay, I believe that I managed to fix the problem. The verbose messages weren't telling me anything since upon restart it would go through all of the services and then back to "Restarting", and then it would freeze. I got a few clock watchdog timeout errors again too, so I decided to go into the BIOS and look at HP's default settings. I noticed that "Integrated Video" was enabled, which I don't need since I have a dedicated graphics card. So I disabled it and viola! The system now shuts down and restarts like a champ and in a snap.

I am still curious, however, as to why that would have conflicted with Windows 8.1 in particular and not any other OS I have had on the system? So if you have an answer for that I would be most appreciative!
