Hello friends,

suddenly i starded having problems with my router. But it's like really weird, like something like this isn't supposed to happen.
So it goes like this:

I have normal wired network connection to modem (from my internet provider). I have pc and laptop at my home. So I also had tp-link router which i used for around 2-3 years for having internet connection both on my pc and laptop. The cable from the provider is connected to the modem, and then the modem connects to router via ethernet cabel. Then the router is connected to my pc via ethernet cabel. And also I was connected to the wifi from the router with my laptop. So this way I had internet connection both on my pc and laptop. But suddenly, after around 2-3 years this problem came: when connected to internet via router (not directly via modem) both my pc and laptop have like 10 times slower internet speed (the normal is 15Mbit/s but this way it has only 2Mbit/s). It doesn't depend on the way its connected to router (via cabel or wifi), coz both my laptop and pc have the same slowed internet speed (one is connected via cable and the other via wifi). So the only way I can have normal full speed right now is if i remove the router from the connection system completely and connect the pc directly to the MODEM via ethernet cable. But the thing is that this way I dont have any way to connect to the internet on the laptop. (So, I don't mind if I'm connectedon both machines with cable, or if the laptop is connected via wifi, as long as i have normal good speed on both machines).
The weirdest thing is that the speed slowed down (it would be more logical if the network via the router didn't work completely) and the thing that my router started acting this way without any reason (it's average router, plus my friend has the same one and doesn't have any problemos).

So what would u suggest, can u discover the reason or smth, or tell me how to connected both my machines to normal internet connection (speed) with some other way. Or should i just simply buy new router (btw tell me which model is recommended, but not some very expensive).

TNX IN ADVANCED!

It is possible that there is an issue with your router - since both the wired and wireless connection is problematic, I would bet that either you have a configuration issue with the router, or the hardware in the router is going bad.

If you feel comfortable in resetting the router to factory specs and setting up the network again - this should be the first step. If you aren't comfortable - have your friend assist you.

If resetting the router doesn't solve the problem, you made need a new router. An average router should run about $50 - a good one can run around $100. The routers above $100 are usually more than you will never need in your current setup.

i didn't say my friend has knowledge about router... if fact he's uneducated, but i guess he's lucky. i don't see how reseting the settings will fix my problem if i didnt change them before i started having the problem. Now i remember, but still isn't logical: i rearanged the room that my modem and router were placed in, and also the bigger part of my apartment.

wow yeah dude, not logical at all but it seems that resetting to factory settings fixed my problem, thank u very much. this is actually the first time i got good answer on this community. btw, now if u could help me with my other problem: i need router with like very strong range coz the room in which my router is placed and the room in which my laptop is placed are very distant, lets say 10 meters plus 3 walls plus i have some other devices in my apartment and my neighbours have routers too.

The first thing I would do is change the channel that your router is transmitting on - if your neighbors are using the same channel - often the routers will "cancel out" each other's signals or create interference resulting in an unstable connection. By default, the 2.4GHz channel is 6 I believe, try setting it to 1 or 12 first and see if the reception improves. You might have to try a few channels depending upon how "smart" your neighbors are (they may be doing this as well).

Second thing - I would try to place the modem and router as close to a central location between the PC and the Laptop as possible. If you still aren't getting good signal - you might want to try power line adapters. Most are "plug and play" - so you plug them into the wall with an ethernet cable to your router and on the other side, an ethernet cable to your laptop. This isn't an optimal solution - but it will give you better results than you have now.
