So i am having the problem that with Windows 8.1 the Disk in Task Manager says it is at 99%-100% and my computer spikes and freezes. I was wondering if it would fix it if i was to completely re install windows, If not do you smart guys have any good fixes. I have tried almost everything on the internet.

-Cheers, Harry

What are the parts in your system, and what kind of apps are you trying to run?

no, don't reinstall unless you are doing a full format of the drive. (not a quick format)

generally there are 3 or 4 causes of windows 8.x running at 100% disk drive use.

- windows 8.x will do repairs of the bad sectors of the drive as a background system process. IE, it will attempt to locate repair and remove data from bad sectors of your drive while the system is running. This can take a long time if your system is set to sleep, or you just installed the OS and have large drives.
(turn off sleep functions and let your system run overnight with the hopes that it finishes the repair process)

- there are certain bugs that result in the system search index looping and scanning the same directory over and over and never stopping. It results in a very large search index database and keeps your drive tied up. (Stop the service to see if the drive useage goes back down.)

- certain bugs in device drivers, use the task manger, resource manager and see what process is using your disk

- certain malware attached to your file system streams. run malwarebytes to scan for malware.

you would also want to run a system file check
run cmd.exe as an admin
sfc.exe /scannow

see if it finds any corruption that it can not repair.

- guess there can also be bugs in the firmware of the drive or your storage controller.
(update BIOS, and chipset drivers for windows, maybe disable lazy writes for the disk drive, update drive firmware if you can )

Running just Windows Exolorer and Firefox (Previously Chrome but uninstalled) creates the heavy freezing and lag. Also games are playable an my FPS are fine but its just the freezing. I am currently running 4GB RAM and 1TB HDD with 800gb of room

Check task manager/resource monitor(alt+cntl+del) and look at the memory section.
See if you are getting high levels of hard faults.
This happens when ram is overloaded and windows keeps swapping code in and out of ram.
See if there is a task that has a large working set.
4gb is not enough if you are doing any important multitasking.

I have ran malware bites and AVG scan and not many big viruses show up, I deleted the small ones like doubleclick and stuff but not anything big. I have another RAM stick on me of 4GB but will that really help, I was running 4gb fine before..

There are no applications that are taking the disk to 100% even though it says it is at 100%, although 'Service Host: Local Service' somtimes spikes really bad.
