Asus Sabertooth Z77 intermittently not regonizing HDD

Hi,

I recently bought an SSD to upgrade my system. I had a 1TB WD Black with 3 partitions, so I formated the Windows partition, unplugged the drive, installed windows with only the SSD plugged in, and then plugged the HDD back in.

Everything was fine and working, but then suddently my board stops regonizing the old HDD. I checked the plugs, changed the SATA port, and it started working again.

But then I left the computer on, and when I came back the HDD was not regonized again, without even restarting the system. I updated the UEFI to see if the problem was there, and the HDD did come back. I started the system again and it was still there, but then I restarted it today and it wasnt anymore.

I'm not sure if Windows can interfere with SATA recognition because when I go to the UEFI the drive isnt there. Once when I wanted to restart the system the screen went black but the hd usage led was on for about 2 min straight and I (stupidly enough) pussed the reset button. No idea if the system was actually doing anything relevant.

I have my SSD on the 1rst 6Gb/s Intel controled port (green), and the HDD on the 3rd port wich is a 3Gb/s also from Intel (black iirc). I'm waiting for a new cable to try and plug the HDD on the 2nd green port and see if that helps in any way. But I would like some ideas or insight on what might be causing this. I'm really lost on this issue, thinking of formatting everything over during the weekend.

Let me know if you need any more info or specs, thanks in advance.

Thanks, I got the chipset drive update from the Asus website, but that version is older than the one you linked, I'll make sure to update when I get home.

The problem with my cables right now is that one end is straight and the other is L shaped. And the 2.5 bay of my case is just a screw whole on the bottom, so I needed to plug the straight end on the SSD and the L shaped end on the board, making it impossible for me to plug to the second green port. I actually bought a 2.5' to 3.5 bay adapter so I can fit the SSD in a better place and then I can switch the cables and connect both to green. I guess that will be better for performance anyway.

Just as it may help somebody, in the end I figured that even though the problem seemed to be on the driver or the UEFI, it was actually Windows, some stupid power saving config was turning off the drive. Iirc, it was in the device properties.
I've had problems with those kind of setting in several different places, sometimes windows, or intel, or Asus shitty management softwares.
