So I could get a cheap ssd from Amazon, it's Intel 40gb space which is plenty for Windows 8 or 7, and maybe a little something else, but it's sata 2 though with 270 mb/s will this be faster than my HDD and are SATA 3 ports/cables backwards compatible with sata 3 thanks!

If you fill up a SSD to the max (or close to max) the performance goes way down. Save up and get a 250GB+

It will be faster than your HDD now. It will work.... But honestly, 40GB would be pointless...

All you are going to get is faster boot times. When you install games/programs on your HDD they will not run better or load faster because they are going to come from the HDD.

You ideally want a larger enough SSD to hold your OS, games and programs. Then have everything like music, videos and backups to go to the HDD.

Once I installed Win7 HP and the normal programs you need to run windows, I think I was at 45GBs. 40GB is just to small. 64GB is the smallest you want, while 128-250 is the best for OS. I have mine on a 128GB SSD, while steam sits on another 256GB SSD. I highly recommend this.

So you could do it... But honestly, I dont think you are going to be happy. Just not enough space.

With the plummeting prices of SSDs I would hold off. Get a 250-500GB SSD. Trust me, you will not regret the upgrade. It is the best upgrade you can get.

Windows 8.1
If you want to run Windows 8.1 on your PC, here's what it takes:

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2

RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
