I have been looking up building an acrylic case for a while now but the one things keeping me from doing it is trying to understand what people mean by EMI/Static build-up.

Is it that much of an issue to worry about it? Obviously no one wants the new gear to fry. I don't live in a dry climate (except winter) and don't build near carpet or anything.

Also if grounding the components is necessary, which I hear it is not, how does one go about grounding components and which components are people talking about.

Any answers and other links to people asking the same will help. I've searched and haven't come up with a solid conclusion yet.

Thanks guys, this forum has always been great for answers. :)

the power supply is connected to ground and should be good enough to ground your components.

the metal shell on most pc cases is mostly for your own protection against shocks due to the internal ground system not working how it should.

acrylic can certainly build up a charge which may affect components but will typically not cause too much of an issue though there are finishes to reduce this.

a bigger issue is shielding. since acrylic doesnt block em waves you may get static noise on things like speakers, phones and other things affected by such waves.

No because components will be grounded through the PSU's power cable and using quality acrylic panels that are almost as hard as glass should minimize the issue. It shouldn't be worse than cases made out of other plastics. I'd be more worried about cooling unless you ensure there's sufficient airflow.
