Is Nvidia 970 worth it?

Hey guys,

My current card is: Gtx 760 2GB. Now my question is would the nvidia 970 be a noticeable upgrade? also is there a big difference between the 970 and 980? cause I'm fine with getting the 980 if it's worth the extra £150-200 :).

I searched on Ebuyer and this is a noob question but from this link:

http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Components/cat/Graphics-Cards-Nvidia?q=nvidia+970&sort=price+ascending

It's the same card of course but Asus, Gigabyte, MSI etc so why are they different prices?.

Cheers ladies and gents.

I recommend MSI. I spend nearly a week deciding between the two, and decided in the end that the MSI is better. :)
Better OCing, thinner than dual slot design, slightly better cooling and a heatsink over the memory chips & VRM.

I'm upgrading from a 760, and my MSI 970 will be here tomorrow.
When overclocked, it performs better than a stock 980.
So if you want best bang for buck, go with the MSI 970.
The ASUS Strix 970 is also a good card, it can't OC quite as well though. :)

From a 760 the 970 would be a pretty noticeable upgrade and it would be worth it upgrading from a 760.

For the 980 and 970 what are you going to be doing with it?

The chipset is made by nvidia and it's essentially the same. Asus, GIG, and MSI all put their own spin on the original or 'reference' design. Their own spin comes in terms of custom PCB, possible backplate, cooling architecture, aesthetic designs. In some cases this results in the cards being able to perform and OC better.

Thanks for the replies lads.

This would be for gaming. A bit of everything really. Currently I just want to upgrade to make sure I can play anything I may want to play in the future :).

I'm not a big fan of OC'ing either :).

I would want to upgrade from 660Ti just for the sake of upgrading, but in reality I know that I do not need the 970 at this point. My monitor is 1920x1200 and there won't be any new demanding games released this year so the upgrade to 2x more powerful GPU is pretty useless as of now.

EVGA cards are great, but not the 900 series. The GPU doesn't make contact with all of the heat pipes so the fans have to work extra hard to cool the card adequately.

I'll probably end up getting the MSI then :). Also one last question, would 700w be okay? and I know it takes an 8 pin and I have a 6 pin and 2 pin so would I be able to use those? silly question I know, but better safe than sorry :p.

Cheers lads!

Ah lovely! Thanks a lot buddy :). Pay day tomorrow so I'll order one then :). And I take it the 6pin + 2pin will be okay to use together for the 8pin requirement instead of using just an 8pin?...sorry I am terrible when it comes to the hardware side :p.

The reason why MSI ir better overclocker than Asus is because it has 8+6 pin connectors, while Asus only has a single 8 pin. With MSI you end up with more power but with 30W higher power consumption as well. MSI has more efficient cooling but it does not have a backplate to support the weight of the GPU.
