Hello all,

I recently upgraded my rig. I went from an AM3 socket, AMD Phenom II to an AMD Athlon x4 FM2+. I changed the MB (Asus), the GPU (Asus) and ram (16 GB GSkill) accordingly. The only thing I kept was the DVD Drive and HD, a 2T Drive.

The case, and PSU (850w) are Corsair.

The rig runs great, but obviously the system will NOT boot due to the OS not recognizing the new hardware. I have the HD backed up with the existing image. Is it possible to same anything off that HD and bring it over, or does it require a total nuke of the HD and a fresh win7 installed on it?

When I upgraded the RAM and the MB last time, (same CPU/Socket type) the system booted perfectly.

Any advice or am I up shitz creek and losing all data on the HD my only option? From other posts it seems to look this way for me too, just desperate for some good news.

Thanks guys.

Sorry, but changing the motherboard to a new socket/chipset generally means a fresh install of the OS. You can try a repair to see if it works long enough for you go save any data from that hard drive, but a fresh install is strongly recommended (and required if the repair fails).

Thanks Wolf. The system tried to repair, but to no avail. Backing up the image wont help me, correct?

No. The image would still contain the drivers and registry settings pointing back to the old hardware. Backing up the image would only be useful if you re-built the old system to restore it to (new hard drive, old motherboard, CPU, and RAM).

What backup utility is being used?

Any good backup utility will allow you to selectively restore data.
