I have an Acer Aspire T690 (or something close to that model) and I'm looking for the nicest running OS to put on (lightweight). I'm thinking of trying Ubuntu Server and the main things this PC will be doing is playing a music library (Foobar2000 is preferred) and web surfing (YouTube, SoundCloud, Games). I've tried Win7 Ult 64 bit and that ran ok, I tried Win8 (core) 64 bit and it seems to run maybe better but haven't done any real tests, just from feel. I put Win8 on it now because of having the latest security and win8 should theoretically run better plus running the regular (windows) app set I like. Different apps are ok and not a deal breaker, local music and web are the main tasks. Thanks in advance guys!!

first of all core 2 duo is not low end its just surpassed by newer processors.. secondly the best modern os that is extremely lightweight for the things you listed would be windows 8.1 which was designed to make the environment more mouse friendly.. i tried it and my computer ran lttle over 700mb of ram while playing youtube video .. the os has lots of newer security so it would be the more logical choice for your computer .. if you were thinking of linux then the most lightweight one in my opinion would be between puppy linux and linux mint .. ubuntu is a bit heavier than those two .. ubuntu is about the as heavy as windows xp is ..
