I just ordered me a H105 to cool my i7-4770k that I plan on OCing. I'm curious if the pre applied thermal paste that comea on it, is good or not. If it's not then what thermal paste should I buy? And what would be the best way to apply it too?

If the thermal paste will only make a few degrees difference like 2-5 then I wont be too concerned about it.

Thanks. =)

You'll be lucky if there is even that much difference. They wouldn't skimp on the TIM and have folks think their coolers are no good. Use it with confidence. If you have to ever re-apply the TIM, check out MX-4. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Okay thank you. I have a tube of Artic 5 or something like that. But it's fairl old and I think that is why my CM Evo 212 doesn't do as good on it as it did on my fx 6350 way back when I first got it.

But thanks for the info guys.

With proper application and proper cooler installation the difference between thermal pastes is minor. AS5 does about 2C better than MX-4 which is tied with mayonnaise. As long as the thermal material is properly installed it will do fine regardless of what brand it is, just don't use chocolate!

I've had better results with MX4 , with my big Air coolers.

Well I only watched 1 video on how to apply paste. And I have always felt like it is probably not the best. Pretty much the way I apply paste is put some in the middle of the cpu then use a coffy filter to sprrad it over the whole cpu. All the way to the edges. Lol like I said I only ever watched one video and that is how it was done. Please correct me if this is bad.

Hardware Secrets has a couple of good articles with lots of pictures on the subject. They have one for smooth base coolers and another for direct touch heatpipes

In the end small dot wins out, but they only saw a 1C difference between stripes and small dot. Like paste selection, as long as you use the right amount of paste how you apply it doesn't make a big difference.

...and you don't want to put it on too thick. All you are attempting to do is fill in the microscopic pores and uneven surfaces of the metal to provide as much contact area as possible.
