I just ordered me a H105 to cool my i7-4770k that I plan on OCing. I'm curious if the pre applied thermal paste that comea on it, is good or not. If it's not then what thermal paste should I buy? And what would be the best way to apply it too?

If the thermal paste will only make a few degrees difference like 2-5 then I wont be too concerned about it.

Thanks. =)

Hardware Secrets has a couple of good articles with lots of pictures on the subject. They have one for smooth base coolers and another for direct touch heatpipes

In the end small dot wins out, but they only saw a 1C difference between stripes and small dot. Like paste selection, as long as you use the right amount of paste how you apply it doesn't make a big difference.

Okay thank you. I have a tube of Artic 5 or something like that. But it's fairl old and I think that is why my CM Evo 212 doesn't do as good on it as it did on my fx 6350 way back when I first got it.

But thanks for the info guys.

Well I only watched 1 video on how to apply paste. And I have always felt like it is probably not the best. Pretty much the way I apply paste is put some in the middle of the cpu then use a coffy filter to sprrad it over the whole cpu. All the way to the edges. Lol like I said I only ever watched one video and that is how it was done. Please correct me if this is bad.

Well... I'm sad.

Had a friend over this evening to help me clean my case and my H105. And to also take it off my 4790k and apply some MX-4 in hopes of better paste performance than the factory one.

After blowing a LOT of dust off the radiator and applying a small amount of paste on the CPU (after cleaning it of course), I ran OCCT in hopes of improved temperatures. Much to my dismay, I got an average of 3-4 degrees MORE than I did just 45 minutes before this whole procedure. Same fan speed, same setting in OCCT, same ambient temperature.

Any ideas?

You should honestly go make your own thread asking about this, will get better responses and less hate for hijacking a thread, especially a old thread that has been answered. But to help you out, I don't have any experience with that thermal paste you used and I know nothing about it, but I know some thermal paste needs a break in period. If that is the case with that thermal paste, then you might experience worse temps for a few weeks, then once it breaks in and settles you would get lower temps.

Now I have no idea if this holds true to your thermal paste or not!!!!!!!

You could have also applied too much paste and it is holding in more temp, or maybe not enough, there could be multiple reasons for this. Either way I suggest to go start your own thread asking about it to get more and better help. =)

Yeah, paste is such a waste of time topic, and most tests that you see online on sites (even like this one) are done improperly. All of them do their jobs. While there may be a difference in how long they take to set and last, like say Fox versus Shin Etsu, anything that comes pre-applied by a big company like Corsair will be fine at first. I use shin etsu for reapplies because it doesn't need to cure and lasts forever, versus fox. But who cares? Don't waste time worrying about it. And don't let hipsters tell you to scrape it off and reapply it. It's a waste of time.
