I've tried searching and searching but all the answers I have found I have tried and it still happens.
most people seem to have the black screens just appear whenever but mine only happen during game play (games like skyrim and the new remastered gauntlet)
the computer doesn't crash, the screen just goes black, everything in my tower is still on and running and sometimes the screen just flickers and says the driver crashed and windows recovered it, any help is greatly appreciated

PSU: Thermaltake( I think that's the brand) 700W
CPU: Phenom 2, 6-core 3ghz
GPU: Gigabyte R7 260X 2GB
MB: MSI 970A G46

It could be a failing motherboard:

could be since I've had it for about a year, but also these R7 260X GPU's seem to all have that problem, if you Google "R7 260X black screen" there's plenty of things to pop up, they have all sorts of motherboards and brands of the GPU that all seem to have the same problem.

ive found one solution where they down the Memory clock from 1625 to 850, been running without a problem for a few hours but wouldn't down clocking the mem clock affect game play in the more demanding games?

any idea on how to test the motherboard? I can put in a new motherboard but it would be a pain to take everything out and that not be the problem

You can't test your motherboard, not really anyway. If it's still under warranty, i would suggest getting a full refund, rather than a replacement, and then use that money to buy this motherboard:

But only if that's an issue with the motherboard at all. Run Memtest86, buy a PSU tester, test everything, especially your GPU (http://download.cnet.com/Video-Card-Stability-Test/3000-18512_4-10418474.html)

memtest had no errors and if it was an insufficient PSU wouldn't the entire computer crash not just the GPU?

Not always, but as it seems to only be a GPU issue from what you're saying, i'd replace it: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/his-video-card-h260xfn2gd
If you still have problems, be sure to post them.

I did a complete wipe and reinstalled windows and all the latest drivers and it seems as though the black screens are gone but now the GPU is running hotter then normal, while doing normal things like on the web it use to be around 37 C and now its always at 42C + , playing games it use to to be 64C MAX and now it easily goes to almost 70C in 5 minutes after starting the game

my guess is it was an old driver conflict, its running about 4-5 degrees hotter than it did before, but its still under normal temperatures for my card, and I haven't had any more black screens
