I was all set to build my next PC (I recently built an awesome mini-itx home theatre PC and had a lot of fun doing it), but this system looks ideal, and great for the price - £600 inc VAT ($975).

I'll be using it primarily for:

  • Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop
Some light gaming (Civ V, Football Manager 2014)
Ableton (I have an external sound card).

Do you think I could get better spec for the money if I built it myself? What upgrades do you think are essential/advisable (there is a configurator on the website below)? Is it blasphemy to buy a pre-built system?

Here's the deal:
http://www.chillblast.com/Chillblast-Fusion-Quasar-Haswell-Gaming-PC.html

Here's the spec:
Basic Specification:

Zalman Z3 Case in Black or White
Intel Core i5 4690K Processor overclocked to up to 4.3GHz
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler
Gigabyte Z87-HD3 Motherboard
AMD Radeon R7 260X 2GB Graphics Card
8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 Memory
1000GB SATA SSHD 7200rpm Hybrid Drive
600watt FSP PSU
Onboard High Definition Audio
Windows 8.1 64bit or Windows 7 64 bit at no extra cost

Please note there is no CD/DVD drive included in this specification as standard - one can be added on the first page of options for this PC

Ports on rear of system: *

4 x USB 3.0 ports
2 x USB 2.0 ports
Audio outputs
1 x 10/100/1000Mbps
Ethernet for network
2 x DVI outputs
1 x HDMI

Also, I have a Samsung 840 Series 128GB SSD and a Presonus External Sound Card salvaged from an old PC to add to the above

Cool - that's a good alternative.

What do you think of the spec? Am I being a bit tight with my money? I am Scottish after all. Will that build last a good 3/4 years?

It should but video card wont be playing any new games too well id say wait for gtx 960 or get gtx 970 if you have the $
