High CPU temp or software error?

I've been having a weird issue with Coretemp and my FX-8350 processor. Occasionally Coretemp will report the CPU temp to be around 240°C and put the computer to sleep after ten seconds as part of the over-heating protection I have enabled. When I bring the computer back out of sleep mode Coretemp is unresponsive and I'm notified by the system that it's crashed. Hardware Monitor and HWinfo both report normal temps on launch after the PC comes out of sleep mode as well. This all typically happens when the computer is idling on the desktop/web browsing/downloading stuff on steam, etc. System usually idles around 10°C and jumps up to to around 27°C doing normal work, watching videos, etc. Slightly higher during CPU intensive gaming. I haven't been able to get the CPU temp above 38°C in any type of stress test.

Obviously the CPU isn't getting to 240°C, otherwise the PC would shut itself down and I'd be able to pull up an error log regarding a thermal event, not to mention something would fry at that temp. Could this be an error in Coretemp itself or just a glitch in the system? It's happened maybe three times since January with two different FX-8350s and two different motherboards of the same make and model listed below. Any insight is appreciated.

Unfortunately I can't pull up BIOS as it's reporting those temps for obvious reasons. It also has a habit of happening of happenong when I'm away from my desk and I come back to a computer in sleep mode. Are there any programs other than Coretemp that will log my CPU temperature to a text file?

Also, I've heard that there is no actual sensor on the FX series chips and the temp is actually calculated using some other means. Is this true?
