I have an Apple Aiport extreme base station A1034. the specs say it has 54 mbps transfer speed...
i also have a Cisco Linksys E1000 and the specs for that say it has 300 mbps transfer speed...

My internet only has a download speed of 10 mbps... so why would i need a router that offer 300?

The usable bandwidth with an N300 router (the Cisco) will allow you to use the full 10Mb WAN bandwidth more of the time. Your usable bandwidth from a G54 (the Apple) will just about keep up with a 10Mb internet. There is no downside to using the N300.

You could use the extra speed to transfer between machine inside your house. People that are buying the high end 802.11ac routers are doing things like streaming video to their tv from their media servers.

The other reason is those numbers are all magic marketing numbers that nobody gets. Even the very fastest routers that clam 1.3g are lucky to get a few hundred meg. Old 54m 802.11g routers will be lucky to get the 10m your connection runs. Even the so called 300m cisco likely get only maybe 50m.

First I would definately go with the Cisco Linksys E1000 because of the ability to load custom firmwares which can offer a ton of extra features. Specs wise their both outdated but depending on your uses then it may not matter. I never thought I would care about having a vpn or large file transfers but with todays media streaming from plex and nice to have a good connection and such. If you dont mind me asking tho, why only the choice between these two routers? There are better options for the price depending on where you are purchasing it from.

The only reason is because of budgets n stuff. I just moved into my parents basement and they still have their 10 year old (airport) router and a friend just gave the Cisco to me so he could buy another one.
