The 980 performs better than the ti, correct. At stock, it will beat any factory overclocked 780ti.
The 970 gets just slightly worse average framerates than the 780, BUT when the two cards get to a part of a game where they chug, the 970 has SIGNIFICANTLY better minimum framerates than the 780. Since it only costs $330, it's absolutely a good buy.
