Yes, between things like your cpu and the cpu in the graphics card. Without any thermal paste the chip would have no place to release the heat it is producing when operating and will eventually cook itself. The paste is need to exchange heat from the source it is produced to the source that is built for dispersing that heat into the atmosphere

I'm sorry, i know this is an old thread, but i just bought the same processor (i5 4690k) and i'm confuse, "theillesthaitian" said yes, but then "USAFRet" said it comes preapplied.
So, this is my question: Is it ok if i dont apply thermal paste (just use the preapplied) and whenever i decide to overclock (near or distant future) THEN i need to clean the preapplied TIM and apply new thermal paste? Is this correct?
