Removed the fan

I did a new build and today it wouldn't turn on. In my infinite wisdom, I checked, and the CPU fan was ding bupkis. Everything else turned on. Infinite wisdom here guys..

In the process, I removed the fan completely, re-applied it, redid wiring and all... Turned out the 24 pin was never locked down after all that. I forgot to make sure the tab locked on my build. SMH.

Basic question. It's been less than 24 hrs, I tested my games and the CPU heat never broke 40 C on the stock fan despite the heatsink and CPU being disconnected. Should I be ok? Or should I still re-paste it ASAP? Been running an hour and the temps are still good, runs with no games at... 29-ish.

what do you mean with the heatsink and CPU disconnected?

I seperated the heatsink from the CPU. All of about 10 seconds.

You should put thermal paste, what thermal paste does is, it makes sure that the cpu and heatsink have full contact with each other, so all the heat transfers to the Heatsink from cpu spreader. You might notice a decrease in temp, if you do that.

Ok don't do that the cpu needs the heatsink and fan be on top of it. That will produce system problems and can kill your system. You should also reapply thermal paste each time there separated to ensure a better heat transfer. And if its a AMD cpu its even more critical to never remove it.

Oh nono, there is thermal paste. I am using the thermal paste that came stock. Sorry about the confusion there. All seems well and good, though. Testing everything and the temps seem to be right at or under even what most people tend to say AMD CPUs get. Not breaking 50 even when I push on my system as hard as I can with BF4 etc.

As long as the paste didn't dry while you had the heatsink removed, and you're not noticing any thermal throttling, I'd say you're good to go.

Nah. The paste was still definitely wet. I checked that when I removed the fan. If it had been dry I wouldn't have bothered asking and woulda made a trip to somewhere local to get new paste.

I'm clocking stock without games running at 27C.. Clocking gaming at 50C... I'd say this is good to go. I've been pressing it, and I don't think there are any issues. Gonna leave this thread open a bit longer in case anyone has their 2 cents to add or I suddenly notice issues.

Ok but its better that every time you remove the heatsink from the cpu you should clean it up and reapply to it because it does not gets the proper connection and over time the thermal paste gets hard and reduce the heat transfer. Also each time its remove air particles gets trap inside and affect the heat conductivity.

just do a prime95 test.

Prime came back fine. CPU never broke 50C.
