Hello,

So I have built my PC and fired it up for the first time. Everything seems to be working except I have nothing on my displays. When I plugged the displays into the GPU, the monitor button turned green and then back to standby. I am attaching a picture to show what is going on.

https://imageshack.com/i/ipX2Jwj6j

The GPU has 2 green lights which I'm assuming means it's good to go. There is a red light in the center of board. So I don't know if that means there is an issue with the CPU.

There are 2 green lights on my GPU where both power slots are; so I'm assuming they have power.

I have been able to determine that the Red light in the middle of the board indicates an issue with the CPU. I do have a 2 4pin cable connected to the 8 pin slot on the board

All pins are in tact. I will note however that the port (8 pin) on the mobo looks like this:
top row: square, round, round, square
bottom row: square, square, square, round

And my cable (2 halves of 4pins) looks like this
top: square, round | round, round
bottom: round, square | round, round

The cable came with the Power Supply; so I dont know if the non-exact match is a problem.

Looks like you need 1008 of the BIOS to support that CPU

This maybe the reason why it won't post. If this BIOS isnt on it , it wont post

I'll be honest, I don't know what "1008 of the BIOS" means. Is this fixable? From my research, the mobo should be compatible with the cpu.

It is compatible but the right BIOS has to be on the mobo to support it. BIOS'es have updates. 1008 is the version of the BIOS that has to be on the mobo youre getting. For the mobo to support it

It looks like this mobo does support ASUS USB BIOS Flashback .According to the site

http://www.asus.com/nz/Motherboards/Z97PROWiFi_ac/speci...

I dont think you need the CPU to do this. Just the PSU

But you do need the update (extract it / and you may have to rename it, look in the manual)

And then put it on a flash drive and then put it in one of the USB ports (read the manual to see which one)

Have a read about what it does in the manual

Info about it here

http://event.asus.com/2012/mb/usb_bios_flashback_guide/

Ok, here is what the manual wants me to do:
"1) Place the bundled support DVD to the optical drive and install the USB BIOS Flashback Wizard. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation."

Is there perhaps a version of the file on the web since I can't see?

Did you see the video on it?? In the link I posted?? Did you try getting the update extracting it and plugging it into whatever port, (after renaming it) to see if it worked? You have to wait for it to finish flashing

The BIOS is on the link I posted under BIOS

I did check out both links you sent, and I watched the video. The process looks easy, however, I can't find the file I need. I think it may be here: http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z97PRO/HelpDesk_Dow...

You select the OS first then under BIOS click on global under the top update 1304. Extract it. You may have to rename it before trying to flash. Check the manual on what name you have to rename it to

Ok, it looks like the BIOS updated successfully. Now back to my CPU port question. Is it ok if the cable that came with the Power supply does not completely match the CPU port on the board? Both the cable and the board are 8 pin; it's just the squares and rounds are different.

I replugged in the cable to test, and the CPU light is still red, and nothing shows on the screen. Monitor still goes to standby.

The 4/8 pin from the PSU is usually ATX not CPU. The CPU fan from the CPU is 4 pin, that goes in the CPU fan header

I dont think it matters if the mobo has only got an ATX 4 pin, just connect one of the ATX 4 pins from the PSU to it

Sorry if I didnt clarify well. The board has an ATX 8 pin, and the power supply has a ATX 8 pin that is broken into 2 4pins.

So....is there more testing I can do on the CPU directly? Since it appears that the board is good now.

Those 2x4 atx connectors should fit the mobo if its got the 8 pin adapter. Just make sure theyre in properly. This is needed for it to turn on or post. If it's working now

If they dont fit theyre probably the wrong connection

The machine "runs" but nothing shows up on the monitors. So if this diagnostic tool needs a monitor, I can't use it.

Ok, the cable must be working because the red LED turns on only when the cable is connected. So it sounds like an issue with the CPU itself.

If youre using a separate videocard remove it see if onboard works. If you are using a separate card you did plug the monitor into it right?? Not into the onboard ?

Can you take a pic of these connectors youre talking about the 2x4 and upload it here

I gather you don't have an internal speaker connected? If so, you could get a beep code which would help point you in the right direction.

Correct, I updated to the most recent. I took the PC apart, put it back together, tried a different CPU cable, and the light is still red. Would the light stay red if the GPU wasn't fully plugged in?

When my monitor is nut plugged in, the power light on the monitor is green and the screen displays a standby thing. Once I plug the monitor into the GPU, the monitor light goes to orange, and the display goes away.

Another possibility is my CPU cooler is not set up correctly. I could try the fan that came with the CPU?

I swapped the cooler, a whole lot of stuff happened.
First the CPU light went to red, Then it turned off, and the DRAM light turned on. Then DRAM turned off and GPU light went red, and back off. The numbers on the motherboard fluctuated all over the place and has ended on AE.

Does this confirm the issue is CPU related?

Have a read of this

Might be this you have to do

I just dug out my user guide for that Motherboard. There are no SATA 3.0 ports on it. I took the cover off to see which port I had the optical drive plugged into. I am in the very bottom and the HDDs and SSD is at the top. AE is a Legacy Boot thing. You are trying to install the OS. If you are installing it to the SSD then unplug the DATA cable from the Hdd.

PROGRESS!! I started over again, and noticed I had my RAM in the wrong slot. I shifted that to A1. I also got rid of the Corsair cooler. Now it works! I am able to see the info on my screen. However, it is telling me there is a CPU fan error. I currently have the CPU fan plugged into the CPU_OPT port. Is that not correct?

If theres a CPU header the fan should be plugged into that. Read the manual. The opt maybe if you connect it from the PSU with a molex connector. Plug it into the CPU header
