Hello.

I'm currently looking to upgrade my GPU to Asus GTX 970 Strix Sli since they only need 1 8-pin PCIe connector and I've two of them on my current PSU.

But I've been reading about issues about non-reference coolers are bad with Sli since they blow the heat back into the case.

Here's my idea so far with NZXT H440, Asrock Z87 Extreme4 & Intel H100i AIO

Leaving one PCIe slot between the cards (Using PCIe slot 2 and 5 on motherboard)

My current card pushes ~250W out.
Two GTX 970 in Sli pushes ~290W out.

Will this work?

As long as you trust your current PSU, you should be fine. I've used nothing but non-reference high performance cards in both SLI and CF. There's no problem. In fact, they usually run cooler than reference design. Besides, the new Maxwell cards are cooler running than previous designs.

Corsair TX650m.. Has been running without a problem for over a year and GTX 970 Sli is only 40W more than a single gtx 780

I don't see any problem. Each card will draw ~12A at load. Your PSU has a strong 54A +12V rail. Even the baddest i7-4xxx is only another 130W (~11A) at load. A bit more if OC'd. While I prefer 750W or bigger for SLI and CF, the new Maxwells change all that.
