Hi,

My current setup is a EVGA P55 Classified 200 with an Intel i7-870 CPU. It's about four years old. I'd like to upgrade my motherboard to get access to USB 3.0. I've been looking around and, since I was thinking of staying with Intel, I had settled my choice for a GIGABYTE GA-X79-UP4 with an i7-4930K. Problem is, I find these a tad costly.

I find myself wondering if the price is really worth the processing power? Or are there any better alternatives with an AMD CPU or even with another Intel CPU. I'm thinking of setting a soft ceiling to 750$ and a hard one at 1000$.

Thank you for your help.

Have you considered a usb 3.0 pci card? unless you just want to upgrade.. The intel chips are going to be faster then the amd 8320 or 8350 the other ones are a waste of money ect 9370? so a I 5 4670 k or 4690 would be a good setup.

What are you running on your computer (gaming, surfing the net, etc) - and do you plan on overclocking? Do you plan on utilizing SLI or Cross-Fire with your GPU?

Are you upgrading everything for $750 or just the CPU?

@johnnyb105 Well I am looking forward to the upgrade and I'm ready to pay for it. I'd simply prefer something less lethal to my wallet.
@ronintexas I use my computer mainly for video games and programming. Thing is I upgraded my video card to a GTX 780 less than a year ago so I'm not expecting having to buy another one anytime soon.

I do a lot of programming with Visual Studio and utilize Adobe CS6-Master edition - as well as some casual gaming. My first build in my signature block is my primary programming/gaming machine. Other than running Photoshop CS6 dealing with large files, there is virtually zero difference in speed between my primary and secondary builds....the primary cost about $700 last year when I upgraded - the secondary was $350 to upgrade.

For gaming now - the core i-5 3570k gives you almost 100% on all games - and should be plenty for programming. 8GB of RAM would be plenty for gaming - depending on the programming you do - you might benefit from 16GB of RAM. The newer haswell boards/CPUs are almost the same price - so you might get more bang for the buck out of that....

If you don't need the RAM - that will save you $$ - also going with 8GB will save you $. The SSD is a great add-on....
