Hey guys my friends computer is running on a asus m5a99fx with a gigabyte r9280x and a evga supernova 850w bronze. Everything else seems to work fine but the gpu won't show. He is currently using the vga rail of the psu and it has 8+6pins. The gpu came with molex to 8+6pin adapters and i fear it is not getting enough power from the vga adaptor. Please reply ASAP it's a fresh build just today and don't wanna end with him blowing 1k+ with a metal box that has no purpose. Thanks also, it does display and everything but the computer itself is not detecting thx

More about : gpu detected

Which version of that power supply have you got? Evga website is showing two, all and semi modular. In either case it doesn't matter, both have 4x 6+2 Pci-e connectors. Shouldn't be needing molex as plugs with +2 can be split separate.

As for the computer not detecting do you mean its not recognized by the operating system? Usually installing video card drivers will solve this as Windows wont install the full driver package, only generic.

If you can turn it on, and if the hdmi or vga cable isin the motherboard and nnot the graphics card, then that means the gpu isn't plugged in. If you mean its not showing, google the r9 290x driver update, download it, install it and restart your computer

In bios it won't say anything about any gpu I will forward this info to me friend thank you very much. It is the semi modular one btw.... Also is there a difference in power between those rails??? Gigabyte supplied them in the box i mean they could have done it for people like me who only have 6pin pcie connectors but I will tell him to install drivers too

no difference in power, both power supplys are designed for multiple gpus.

There will be 2x 6+2 pci-e connectors already coming from the wires shown coming from the psu in addition to VGA 1 and 2. The graphics card as you know has two power connectors, don't combine 1 power output into two using molex, use both ie; VGA 1 and 2 using separate cables.

Yes I understand that but the adaptor uses 2molex I believe to 6pin/8pin (both separate adapters)

VGA 1 and 2 would be for the 2nd card if he ran xfire. Can use them to power the card or the ones from the psu, it doesn't matter long as use both connectors to individual plugs.

Sorry i posted that at the same time as your last post.

Is this the psu? http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=110-B2-085...

Looking at wires in package it contains there are no molex adapters.

Thats molex, unless the motherboard came with it, sometimes they do.

Shouldn't need Molex in any case, if the PSU only has an 8 Pin with no +2, there should be an 8 to 6 ping amongst those cables he got with the psu.

The gpu has an 8pin anyway. 8 + 6 pin.

Dont need it, the psu has the right connectors.

Its hard to see, those two VGA plugs are 6+2 meant for either 6 or 8 pin gpus. just clip off the +2 for the 6 pin.

So its all good now, no problem? Molex is only meant for older psus not having pci-e connectors. The psu has all the appropriate connections there for put the molex adapters back in the gpu box.
