Not significantly big for gpu intensive games. but you would soon notice your power bill going up.

Thanks for the reply! Do you think I will still be able to play on high settings on modern games? The processor is water cooled by a h80i btw.

High settings running wiht GTX 970? It destroys games in 1080p gaming with maxed out settings.

I would like to disagree with the post of poor..... GTX970 is more power efficient than R9 280X under load.

Even a gtx 750ti can run most modern games on High at 50 fps average with drops of 30 fps paired with a x4 760k (As tested on some youtubers from games like Bf 4, Grid 2, Metro Last Light).

I'm referring to his cpu.

I know the gtx 970 is bad a**, but will my cpu make it less bad a**?

Basically not, as it gives you more performance you also have to draw more power. But as a comparison to 7970, R9 290, R9 280 it is more power efficient underload but stressing it further to boost performance bridges the gap between these cards, for it draws more power correspondingly.

I am legend, I'm asking about bottlenecking not efficiency. Or I'm really confused

"I know the gtx 970 is bad a**, but will my cpu make it less bad a**?"

I thought you mean you can lessen your power consumption by pairing it with X4 760k.

Oh, for bottlenecking, which I did not see any benchmark for that combination yet, but the probability of bottlenecking is really high.

It is a mismatch, the best pair for X4 760k is the R9 270`s in my opinion. Thus the best math for the GTX 970`s are the i5`s, i7`s and the FX 8000 to FX 9000 series.

Yes, it will bottleneck.

Tom's Hardware did a feature a little while ago where they showed an affordable AMD 750K based build (the 750K being very similar in performance to the 760K you have). Even with a 750K overclocked to 4.2, moving beyond an R7 260X on the GPU side introduces a bottlneck, as the CPU starts to seriously limit the performance too much.

The performance with an R9 290, which is weaker than the 970 you're considering, was barely 10% higher than with an R7 260X (as opposed to the over 100% increase seen when partnered with a better CPU). A 970 really would be a waste unless you were planning to upgrade the CPU in the nearish future, as the build would simply be too unbalanced, and a lot of its potential will be wasted.

EDIT: Didn't see your most recent post, iamlegend. I agree with you, an R9 270 is probably about as far as the OP should realistically go with that CPU.

Considering the GTX 970 is one of the most efficient graphics cards you can buy, tell me how you think it will raise the power bill? It is rated for nearly half the wattage of my HD 7970. Also anything past an R9 270 is a waste of money, with that CPU. The minor overclock isn't going to affect much either.

What CPU do you guys think I should get? I really want a computer that will last and the CPU sucks. Do you think I need to go to am3+ for higher end processors?

Something like this would be just right for a GTX 970.

I doubt he would notice his power bill going up from a 970. They are very power efficient.
