I recently moved into a 9 bedroom house at university and we have fiber optic internet, however this currently runs over wireless only and I am quite a way from the router and therefore sometimes struggle with connection speeds.

Someone else in the house already has a set of power line adapters plugged in, however these are old adapters and do not have a pair / security button on them.

If i buy some new power line adapters and use them as you normally would, will they work or will they clash with the others? How do i get around this.

Many Thanks

Solution
Depending upon the adapter, anywhere from 50Mpbs to 500Mpbs (there may be faster ones now). They will tell you the max on the adapter - but like wireless - you never get 100% of the "max" speed.

right now i am using a tp-link TL-WDN3800 pci-e network card with 2 antenna's.

I am getting 58% signal strength. Sometimes the internet just drops out completely and I hoped having a wired connection would help to solve this.

i am on the other side of the house and on the next floor up and being an old house it has thick walls.

The wireless adapter is worth a shot. It may be the best way to connect. Since you are on the other side of the house, and on the second floor, perhaps installing a router as an access point in your room would provide the others with a good connection. (the router would be connected via ethernet and the powerline adapters).

I already have the wireless card in my computer and while it connects to the network my download, upload and ping are massively inconsistent.

The person in the room across the hallway already has an old set of powerline adapters plugged in, they did go to an old looking router however when connected to this router you could not access the Internet (I'm presuming this is with the Internet now being fibre and the router was left from before the upgrade)

I was simply thinking if I get my own pair of powerline adapters would I then be able to use these whilst the person in the other room uses a pair of adapters too? Would they stop each other working or interfere?
