Firstly, some advise:
-You'll not benefit much from hexa core system vs i5 or i7. I'd get 4790k at most for gaming, great CPU, will save you some precious bucks. DDR3 is not gonna become obsolate anytime soon too.
You can then upgrade the GPU to GTX 980, which's better than ANY single GPU in the market.

PSU: A SeaSonic 620W or XFX 650W core edition would be good enough. You'd want a 750W to support SLI.
If you modify it, you'd need, a recommended 850W PSU for SLI 980 for a good amount of headroom.

Could I use DDR3 RAM on the motherboard I use? Sorry if that is an obvious question, this is my first PC build :)

Nice system right there.
I agree with the answers above, 650w from a good psu suplier (seasonic, corsair, pcp&c, antec...) is enough.

However, I wouldn't recommend a Rosewill psu, I've seen a lot of reviews (jonnyguru) where rosewill PSUs fail in different tests. Maybe they have improved in the last years (like thermaltake), I don't know.

No that socket uses only DDR4.

Support for DDR4 3000(O.C.) / 2800(O.C.) / 2666(O.C.) / 2400(O.C.) / 2133 MHz memory modules

As mentioned, only DDR4 are supported by Haswell-E MoBos.

750 watt EVGA B2 is $50 on newegg and gets 9.5 build quality rating .... it's not a G2 or a P2, but they don't cost anywhere near $50

A gaming PC on 5xx doesn't make lotta sense unless you are using 3 or more GFX cards, money would be much betetr spent ona 2nd 970 ... these buggers scale 88% in SLI. With the meeny you sabe gettinga decent ghaming board and 4790k, you could pay for that 2nd card and get a $800 RoG Swift Monitor ...2560 x 1440, G-Sync 144 Hz

X99 means ya install RAM in quad not dual channel (4 sticks not 2)
