Hi All,

My last resort was to post here and seek help. :(

I am assuming I have done everything that I have known to make my external HDD work or just even retrieve the files.

FORMATTING IS NOT AN OPTION since I want to retrieve very important files on my external HDD

A couple of hours ago it was working until I click a folder on my WD My Book External HD and it freezed. I tried to click on anything but my laptop wont respond. So dumb of me by not to wait patiently but instead turned my laptops power off. When I turned it back on my external HD is not working anymore. Here`s what I already did:

1. I tried plugging it on my MAC book(diff. computer from before) but it didnt work
2. I tried unstalling the WD HD from disk manager and restart my PC and plugged it back it didnt work
3. I Tried unplugging my WD External HD and even directly plugged it in the wall restart my PC, switch USB ports back and fort it didnt work
4. I tried opening disk manager I can see it there but it says Disk 1 Unknown unallocated (see screenshot)

and initialize it but it says ``Device is not ready`` (see screenshot)

5. I tried installing data recovery softwares
a. ASOFTECH
b. EASEUS
c. O&O
d. YODOT
e. Softonic Magic Partition

none work

Some of this data recovery software detects the External HD but it says 0 files when i scanned for backup

6. I even used WD Diagnostic tool no luck
7. There`s 1 option I havent done, open the external HD and plug it on a desktop as slave since this is too extreme and more work so I ask here first.

Hoping to find a solution here and someone who is kind to help. Thanks in advance

Regards and more power

EDIT: I also used RECUVA from this thread http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html

but the external HDD drive wont show

Solution
Hi there mrpinoyuploader,

I am really sorry that your WD My Book is causing you problems. As your information is really important, I would say that your safest bet is to contact one of the WD's Data Recovery Partners. Keep in mind that running different recovery software programs may further damage the data.
Regarding your question about whether to open the device and try to connect the drive internally, I would say that it is not a good idea. The WD My Book line has a hardware encryption(chip in the enclosure) feature and you will simply wont be able to access the data if the drive out of the enclosure.

Hope this will help,

Hi Meteorsraining,

Thanks for your response but the drive letter wont even show, you cant even right click on the window to change drive letter it doesnt even say how much the file size of the HDD You can only see Disk 1 Unknown (Unallocated)

try this link if it works for you http://img274.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=692185588_sc1_122_122lo.jpg

The link worked. I've seen such issues, but since you've tried almost all solns. except Slave drive, I'm not aware of any other good solns. either. Try the slave drive method, there's still a chance it may work.
Can you feel it spinning at all? I'm afraid the drive has failed. You might as an extreme resort need to recover it professionally with a pro physically taking out platters and recovering data, which'll cost $$$.

Thanks for your response, I'm not sure if the drive is spinning. I still have faith that I can still recover my files since it is still detectable by disk manager it's just that it wont open. I have tons of work related files to retrieve thats why I was so frustrated

Thanks for the link this can be a big help for me ill try to call it tomorrow and luckily I'm from Canada and the address from one of the support you gave is 6 mins, drive from my place i just hope it wont cost a fortune.
