Has anyone on the forum had any experience with these type of displays regarding their performance, applicability to gaming and or has any recommendations regarding best brands/model numbers?

Any assistance is appreciated, even recommendations to an alternative high-colour bit depth IPS monitor.

Thanks in advance!

Agra.

I think the upcoming Dell U3415W looks like the most interesting, 3440x1440 curved display.
I think LG has something similar in the works and the already have a flat 3440x1440 monitor available.
These are 34 inch monitors.

In the lower resolution, the screens are typically 29 inch.
LG makes a number of these too.
The higher resolution monitors above are like a 27 inch 2560x1440 monitor with extra width.
The 29 inch monitors are like a 24 inch 1920x1080 monitor with extra width.

In terms of quality IPS monitors, I would recommend the Dell U2713HM. This is a 27 inch 2560x1440 monitor.
Note that all these monitors have IPS glow which some people find distracting. It makes the screen glow when viewed from an angle, which is visible in the corners when viewed head on. See if you can try an IPS monitor and view a dark scene in a game to get an idea of how much this will bother you.
If you see screens of type PLS or AHVA, this is the same as IPS.
Because of this IPS glow I am considering replacing my IPS monitor with the BenQ BL3400PT which has an AMVA screen instead.

I have in the past used these types of monitors before. Personally, I love them. To share my opinion, the aspect ration at times can be a problem, especially with movies. Since movies are pretty much always 16:9 these 21:10/9 monitors can look a little stretched at times. For multitasking and gaming, it is almost always very good.

As listed above with the 3440x1440 displays, those are extremely expensive and many ultra-HD displays are cheaper. The curved nature of some though is very appealing, and something I would really want.

Someone else sent me a PM suggesting the LG-34UC97 (the curved one) as well. But unfortunately I still have not figured out how to grow money next to my celery. I think the 29 inch would be to upper limit of what I am willing to spend on a screen. $600-700 retail in Australia. There are so many monitors, that are all of such high quality, at that price.

Do you think that the widescreen is good as a pure gaming monitor. Setting aside the arguments for trading good colour and detail for high hertz. Another question I can't make my mind up about.

Do VA panels not have the glow you mentioned? What about TN? Sorry for all the questions. The monitor is proving to be the most difficult decision in my new build.

VA and TN panels don't have the same glow issue as IPS/PLS/AHVA.
TN panels have colour shift issues when viewed off angle. A good TN panel though can have pretty good colour, e.g. Asus ROG PG278Q.
I've never used a VA panel, but it is something I an considering.
If I had to choose between a 27 inch 2560x1440 and a 29 inch 2560x1080, I would choose the 27 inch. The extra vertical size and the higher pixel density make this a clear winner and they are about the same price.

A quick summary of the three panel types:
IPS has the best colour but exhibits IPS glow.
VA has the best black levels and contrast, very good colour and minimal glow.
TN has quick response times but poor colour if viewed off angle.

Cheers for the responses. The monitor debate is hurting my brain. I'm not really able to compare brands/types hands on so I'm relying on these threads to make sense of the maelstrom.
