Hi everyone... My school gives its students a laptop to do school work on. (I'm on school holidays for the next 2 weeks, so I can't connect to the school network)

I've been getting messages saying my password will expire soon. When I tried to change my password, it said something about being unable to do so due to not being connected to the school network.

I tried a command prompt method to extend the life of the password, but as I'm not an administrator, access was denied.

I'm worried that I will be locked out of my computer when the password expires, and I have a major assignment that I have to do on my laptop... please help?!

You should be able to log in locally to your computer after the password expires. You won't be able to log into the school network until you change your password (since you aren't connected - when you do connect, it will allow you to change it then).

If it locks you out locally, you may need to contact the school's IT department for help. I am not sure what they have set forth for account policies.

Yes, that is what will happen. You will be locked out. You can't fix this without being on the school network.
Spectacularly bad planning on the part of the school admin and IT staff.

I suggest you contact your school staff and see what they suggest.

I assume if its the schools computer and its not at school it may have safeguards in place to render it useless if its not checked in on the schools system
it would be silly for them not to have some kind of anti theft or misuse thing on it

Does it say exactly how far you are from it expiring?

One option would be to basically get within WiFi range of the school, then change the password.

Thank you all!! I might not have a chance to get to my school to connect to its wifi, but I've set my power options so the computer never sleeps or turns off. (I hope this works)
