Bootable HD image restore on tablet?

Thankfully I destroyed my tablet before my trip and realizing the reality. I have a 32GB Win 8 tablet running on an Intel Atom 3735D. Works nicely but the system restore image takes up a lot of that space and the HD is formatted as 24GB of space. I'd like that back and to put the system restore image onto a USB stick along with an image of my entire HD -- which should be easily done using a standard 32GB USB stick. In theory. But it isn't.

I'm discovering that while it's 2014, these USB sticks must be formatted to FAT in order to boot using system restore? As a result, there is a 4GB limit to file sizes. This means you can't have a bootable restore set along with an entire HD image to restore your entire disk to where you set it up nicely. I had to use an external drive to create 2 partitions - one FAT, one NTFS and store each on different areas.

It's also next to impossible to remove the system restore image. I've read that you need to boot into the system tools and use DISKPART to have it removed. When you boot up you should be able to use Windows to extend the active partition to take up that space. None of the standard tools seem to work, e.g. Acronis (totally useless for tablets), Easeaus, Paragon (destroyed the disk trying to resize it, even though it said it was successful.) I've tried these tools with other tablets -- I can't even get the tablets to boot up using anything other than the System Restore image. Microsoft's website is confusing beyond belief given terminology differences between Win 7 and Win 8 and I can't seem to accomplish what should be very simple. Is it? :)
