Upgrade to Nvidia GTX 980 or WAIT?

Here are my rig specs:
Core i5-3570K (running @ 4.2 Ghz - slight auto voltage OC).
Asus Sabertooth Z77 Motherboard
Asus 670 GTX DC2T
16 GB of G.Skill ripjaw-X DDR3 1600Mhz
SSD 256GB Crucial M4.
HD Western Digital Black 2TB
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14
Case: Corsair CC600T Graphite White Special Edition
Running Win 8.1 64bit. Pro

I am looking to upgrade my Asus GTX 670.
I was waiting patiently for the past couple of years, skipping the stronger 600 and 700 series. I was waiting for the Maxwell chips.

Now the question is, should I buy the GTX 980 NOW? Wait for its price to come down? or wait for a GTX 990 or GTX 980ti?

I am leaning toward: waiting for a GTX 980ti so the performance boost from GTX 670 will be a more significant leap forward, and to be more future proof.

Also, which brands should I buy?
Asus, EVGA, MSI...?
In terms of cooling, stability, performance, features ?

Needless to say I buy this for gaming purposes mostly.

Solution
Wait because the 980ti is going to be sooo much faster than the 980, unless you want to go with a Sli build, then 2x 970GTX is the way to go. I wouldnt buy a reference design, wait for the SuperClocked or Classifieds to come out.

All monitor specs aside, here is an answer specifically to your question.

The 900 series is mainly meant as an upgrade for the 600 series and prior. You will not regret grabbing a 970/980 now as the performance boost is a leap.

MSI and Asus have very nice 900 series cards out right now, if I had to choose I would grab an Asus Strix card.

Personally, I am waiting for the 980 Ti as I have a 770 and performance jump to the current cards isn't all that great. Hopefully the Ti will be something to write home about for the 700 series users as right now the series ain't all too special (especially considering 700 series owners are getting a lot of the driver benefits that 900 series has).

I think it would be worth it if you're trying to max games out, even at 1080 but I would at least wait for the 8gb version of the 980. I only mention that after being surprised by the 6gb required for the ultra setting of Shadows of Mordor.

Where did you find a 6 GB video memory requirement for that game? I looked at the official system requirements and the game recommends a GTX 670 or HD 7970, which is up to 3 GB.

Thank you, I basically play on a big LED Samsung TV 55" that's a 1080p @60hz - connected via HDMI to my home theater Pioneer VSX-823-K Receiver.

I am planning on replacing my pc monitor to a 144Hz 1440p 1ms (Asus ROG SWIFT pg278q) or a BenQ BenQ XL2420Z 24.
But even if I go 144hz or 1440p or both - I think I will still find myself doing most of my gaming on the 1080p 55" smart TV, on the sofa, since it works very well and looks great.

Regardless of monitor/tv I still feel that while the GTX 980 is mighty efficient and strong card, waiting for the next big one say... 980ti is my best bet.

Will I be bottlenecked with my current rig? I believe I won't but please let me know. Also do I have enough power in that PSU?

p.s I am also very excited about Shadow of Mordor, although 8 GB of VRAM sounds far-fetched.

On top of what swede69 said, If your looking for some nice cards to push even more power threw OC, then wait for the classified cards to come out, which are confirmed to be released mid/late October.

There were some pictures shown of the graphical settings in a couple articles that I saw and the Ultra textures require 6gb. That's just for ultra so most people might not care, I'm just one of those obsessed with maxing out things.

Just to add to this... game developers are soon to be pushing only recommended requirements. Anything lower then what they specify, they don't promise optimal performance..

My PSU is Corsair 850 AX GOLD (modular), 850w obviously and thanks.

So is 990 = 980ti?
I am definitely going to wait, I waited this long, so I am willing to be more patient and spend some more for a bigger upgrade.

Also did anyone try and play Shadow of Mordor? How is the performance optimization for PC?
