Is it okay to buy a smartphone released on or before April 2013? For example Sony Xperia SP?

It's still got pretty decent specs, should be OK for a few years.

I was running an old Samsung Galaxy S2 at the start of this year. Used they are cheap, ~$100. Can be used with any prepaid plan as long as its unlocked, and had good enough specs for me. (I don't "game" on my phone though.) Unless you see something wrong with the Xperia it should be fine.

If your buying it used you will want to have the seller download a touchscreen test app so you can ensure that the touch screen digitizer is not dysfunctional in any way before you buy it. Meet up some where that you can test the wifi and gps also. Other than that you should be alright, if it needs a new battery they are easily replaceable.

My needs/wants might be different then yours. As long as the phone does what you need, and you can afford it, it's the best choice.
