I was wondering, if a console can run games at 30-60 fps at 1080p with its low powered hardware, obviously the OS has to be minimal. That said, I wondered if there was a very low level running OS that could still run windows games so I could get excellent performance. Any and all help is welcome. My specs:
AMD Athlon II x2 220
Nvidia GeForce 750 Ti
4GB RAM
3 Hard Drives totaling 1.1 TB
Current OS: Win 7 64 Home Premium

Consoles are able to run games with high fps because the graphics are less intensive than PC.
That isnt to say that their "OS" is not made for gaming. It is. But 90% of the higher fps comes from less demanding graphics.

Yes, I know that, but with my PC on lowest settings, it will still run slower thanks to a slower OS. I clearly have surpassed the strength of an XBOX 360 or PS3, so a fast OS is all I need.

Your cpu is very old and your graphics card while new is the budget model of the 700 series. Also Ram is cheap might as well spend an extra $50 and get 8 gigabytes.

I know I have a lower powered PC, but that's EXACTLY why I want a low powered OS! If there's someone who can help me instead of just saying: Upgrade, your specs suck. I mean come on, that's not what this question was about. I AM upgrading and getting a new custom PC, but regardless, you haven't answered my question. Is there a low powered OS than can run windows programs? I don't care how, as long as it works.

Sorry for sounding kind of rude. I'm not good at communicating over forums and such.

The only OS capable of running windows games its the windows its self. you could try installing a Steam OS that is free and its base of linux... Check the steam website to see if you are interest of does games...

Well what about Wine? That runs windows programs, but I've had many problems with it. If I could get it all to work however, what low powered Linux OS do you recommend?

I don't want SteamOS because of it erasing everything, and I don't want to install it with only one hard drive in and then put my one with Win7 on in afterwards as a backup and then have to constantly change the boot order sibcevit doesn't have a boot loader.

Sorry for beating around the bush. You are not going to like the answer.

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=stea...

Even the steam OS which is based on linux, which only runs games compiled for linux, only gets at max 5-10% more fps.
In some benchmarks it is tied with windows 8.1

To say your cpu is equal to a playstation 3's processor is just wrong. The architecture of a ps3 is a 6-7 core cell processor running at 3.2 gigahertz, which isnt even comparable to x64 that intel and amd processors use.

Your graphics card Geforce 750 ti does beat the graphics processor of the ps3 which is based on the Geforce 7800.

But your processor and lack of ram bottleneck your games.

If you only want to play games coded for linux and you want 0-10% more fps than yes Steam OS would be a solution.
But those are very particular circumstances.

That is not the problem its the cpu your cpu its way to slow for this newest game and some older ones you could try upgrading the cpu to a AMD Athlon II X3 435 at $105 or a AMD Phenom II X4 925 for a $150. But its your choice. If you wish instead of upgrading the cpu upgrade the motherboard as well. check this one out. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/9BVvZL this is in between both prices and it will make it more up gradable and it will fix all your problems i recommend it

So NOONE has thought to make a very fast Linux OS? I can install Wine on it, it just would have to be a fast OS. And do you mean my CPU is WORSE or BETTER than a PS3? I didn't quite understand... But if I can't find a fast Linux OS, then are there other OS? Like Solaris? I don't know what it is, but I've seen it in a different section of Linux, but I have no clue about it.

I am saying cell is much better than your cpu.

Also the steam os is a very fast Linux OS but even that only gains 10%.
Hardware can only do so much.

The build i sent you is the only alternative i can give. Its great because you keep the psu case hdd graphics card and ram... And there's no other os for gaming faster than the steam os. its upgrade or upgrade if you want it be faster. i recommend upgrading only 2 parts of your pc. Believe me you wont regret it.

Are you running DDR2 or DDR3? New CPUs only support DDR3.
