I'm planning on upgrading my rig, and had everything specced out and priced, but like I normally do, I held off on getting it in case I started having doubts. Unsurprisingly, I'm beginning to reconsider the original plan.
I had been looking at getting:
MSI X99S SLI Plus Motherboard
Intel Core i7-5820K (overclocked somewhere around 4.5-4.9 GHz, hopefully)
Corsair H100i
Intel 530 Series 120GB SSD
16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 2666 MHz DDR4 RAM
However, due to the expense and considering getting a new camera, I'm wondering if it's worth it.
I do a mixture of Audio work, 3D Modeling & Texturing, Gaming, Browsing, and the occasional bit of video work, so I believe I would see the benefits of such a system (though it might still be overkill).
I'm now wondering if instead, I should just get an i7-3770K, and consider upgrading my monitor and/or GPU. If I was to go for GPU, I'd probably get a GTX 970, and possibly get a 1440p monitor (not sure which monitor yet, haven't really looked into it).
I'm intending to get the Corsair H100i and the SSD regardless of how the decision goes, so there's no need to try and convince me on those.
I just wanted to see what people thought, and how they might advise. Is an overclocked Ivy Bridge i7 worth getting to save money versus going for a full platform upgrade?
One more thing - I'd like to upgrade sooner, rather than later (i.e. by the end of November), so I don't think that waiting for Broadwell or Skylake is something I'd be interested in doing.
