Goal: I need to add a dual NIC to my computer so that I can create two VM’s, each with their own physical NIC so that I can have the VM’s on different networks.

Reason: I’m working on my CCNA in a home lab, I have 2 Cisco routers on different networks and need two hosts that I can connect to the different networks in order to test connectivity. Instead of having several physical machines, I want to use VMs on my desktop computer.

Hardware: I have an Asus Z97 M motherboard with 4 PCI slots.
Slot 1: PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16_1 slot (at x16 mode) Has an EVGA GTX 770 in use.
Slot 2: PCI (Empty)
Slot 3: PCI (Empty)
Slot 4: PCIe 2.0 x16_2 slot (max at x4 mode, compatible with PCIe x1 and x4 devices.) Empty, but this is where I’d like to place the dual NIC.

Link to motherboard manual: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1150/Z97M-PLUS/E9009_Z97M-PLUS.pdf

Link to Dual NIC that I want to purchase: http://www.amazon.com/Syba-Ethernet-PCI-express-Controller-SY-PEX24028/dp/B00965J4TS/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
Questions:
1) Will this PCIe x1 NIC work in slot 4?
2) Will adding this NIC cause any performance issues with the GPU on Slot 1?

Thanks!

Solution
The motherboard manual states the PCI-Ex16 (x4) slot is compatible with PCI-Ex1/x4 devices, so yes, you can install a Dual-NIC into that slot. THe motherboard manual also states dual VGA/PCIE card operating mode as x16/x4; meaning that if you install a PCI-E card into the PCI-Ex16_2 (x4) slot it will not take away any performance from the PCI-Ex16_1 (x16) slot.

Thank you, that was my thought process too but wanted to run it by someone others just to make sure I understood what I was reading.

Based on what you read, do you think I would need to make any changes in BIOS for the PCI operating mode?
