Graphics Card: SAPPHIRE 100352-3L Radeon HD 7950 3GB 384-it it GDDR5
CPU: AMD 6350 Six core 3.9 GHz
RAM: Only 4 gibs of DDR3
Motherboard: MSI 970A-G43

've been really thinking only completely rebuilding my computer to help my frames on arma 3. But i figured i would just upgrade my graphics card first and go from there.
Here is my current build as of today.

My friend has almost the same setup but has two 290s. Is it work getting the 970? Have any other suggestions? My budget is 500 bucks.

Solution
Lol.
Doesn't matter, stick with the RAM and the PSU you got,get the MSI 970 Twin Frozr V and get ready to kick some ass. :)
Also,do consider changing the CPU and MoBo sometime soon.Make sure you get a MoBo that supports SLI so you can another 970 and eat thru any game.
But again, when the time comes, you'll make a new thread and we'll tell you what's the best option. :)
The GTX 970 gives you the best performance for the money right now. ASUS and MSI cards are getting acclaimed reviews right now. The EVGA GTX 970 SSC cards are wickedly fast (probably the fastest of all the models), but the quality is pretty much hit and miss right now since some people complain about coil whine with some of the ACX models. Mine is good, though.

You decide

The 970 is a card that we haven't seen the likes of before....

- It's 25% faster than previous generation
- It's overclocking 25% and more on the review sites
- It scales 88% in SLI

MSI and Gigabyte are getting the best reviews .... Asus, as typical since the 7xx series, has grossly underclocked their card and EVGA's is defective .... the heat sink only covers 2/3 of the GPU.

I would suggest an MSI or ASUS GTX 970.
Best card for money right now and it is extremely power efficient for such a powerful GPU,it has higher potential for OCing,it produces less heat and it stays cool, all thanks to the ~140W TDP.
I mean,it is comparable with the 780 Ti and it's stronger than the R9 290X.
There is no other option.
Also, get some new RAM,like the G.Skill Sniper 1600 MHz 2x4GB.Getting another stick of the same exact RAM doesn't necessarily mean that it's gonna work.RAM manufacturers sell RAM in kit of 2x4,4x4,2x8 etc, because they've tested it already and it worked fine.If you get the same exact RAM(same timing, same freq, same latency) seperately,no one can guarantee that it'll work.
Again, new RAM is a better option than getting another stick of 4GB.
You should also start saving money for a better CPU and mobo. And for a 750W PSU so you can SLI the 970 and get some killer performance.
But,when the time comes, you'll post a new thread and we will tell you what's the best option. :)

2133 RAM is oft same or cheaper than 1600 in 2 x 4Gb ... almost always at 2 x 8 GB (ignoring the off brands)

2 x 4 GB DDR3-1600 CAS 9 - $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428
2 x 4 GB DDR3-2133 CAS 9 - $87 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226200

2 x 8GB DDR3-2133 CAS 9 - $155 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231568
2 x 8GB DDR3-2133 CAS 9 - $155 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226200

Don't hold off long on the PSU.... the $50 EVGA B2 at $50 won't be on special for long. That's a $100 + PSU with a 9.5 jonnyguru Build Quality Rating
